a little dead but thats to be expected it should have been a general linux help area.
only a small portion of people uses ubuntu. there are better distrobutions for servers and ones that work on a wider variety of platforms offer more security, expandability, and performance from the kernel desighn.
while ubuntu is nice in that its almost impossible to f**k up, those nice little failsafes also weaken your performance. sorry if that crushes your dreams. guess you could post general linux help qeustions here and i could naswer them. ne wayz.... have a nice day

I actually use Kubuntu but like Ubuntu it is designed to be user friendly. Those other distros are OK for geeks but if you just want a secure O/S that's FREE & easy to use & gets the job done then K/Ubuntu are a good starting point. :smart:

LMFAO cj all those are free the only thing you would have to pay for is support from red hat wich you dont neeed the fedora community helps out red hat users since its pretty much the same distro just diff icons . take that back they are the same distro red hat owns fedora.

I have FreeBSD, Knoppix, Fedora, Sabayan, Debian, PC-Linux, SUSE10.0, openSUSE10.2,10.3 & 11.0, MEPIS, Damn Small Linux, Dreamlinux, Slackware, Slax, Gentoo, Puppy, LinuxMint, Zenwalk, Mythbuntu, Mandriva 2008 & Linux One but prefer Kubuntu & Ubuntu for ease of use... free wasn't an issue when deciding .. as you said .. they all free. :tux2

Vladd got me to make the switch to ubuntu, easy transition for me, took mrs plym a bit to get used to it but I think beryl was what it took to convince her.

yea i heard about that time b4 last that i talked to V.
it was never really an option for me the system i learned linux on didnt have support from ubuntu then when i got a job building servers and was ready to make a change i couldnt use ubuntu the companies policy is to provide the best in security performance and expandability. and like ne other buissness server the distro has to meet industry standrds wich leaves debian red hat fedora and possibly suse. so i moved to fedora core 6 (zod) wich is still my fav 7 and 8 have the 2.7 and 2.8 kernels the drvers are built into the main kernel like windows its so shitty and has a ton of bugs. but RHEL9 wasnt too bad ive had to set up bout 40 units with it. red hat still rmembered when they rewrote those kernels that it was for servers and included support for a wider range of machines than the original. fedora 8 is still lacking alot but its not supposed to have a final release for several more months.

lmao linux is also for machine who dont quite make the performance cut for xp but with that aside the new 2.8 kernel is bout as bad as an xp system and depending on what your doing could actually be worse i wonder how long its going to take fro them to revert back to 2.6 and then redo the work and performance tweaks they added to 2.7 to make 2.8 like the new thread scheduler . kind to think of it thats about all theyve added the rest was just stuff they forgot to rewrite from 2.6 to 2.7. the rest of the improvements were from the filesystems i heard there working on an ext6 if its not out already

I was running Slackware on the little in-house server, but the hardware died. The spirit was willing but the body was weak.

Now I'm running Kubuntu on the lappy and the new server. Mainly because out of the 4-6 distros that I tried, Kubuntu was the first to figure out how to use my hardware.
The invisible man is blind. If light passes through a body without being affected, then it cannot be properly refracted by the lenses. It won't be focused and he will constantly see a blur of random colors as lights hit the rods and cones from each direction.

I tried Vista...I hated Vista...I'm not really fond of XP...I kinda miss 98SE...but then again, I think that they ought to bring back hanging, if for no other reason than the sake of the rope industry....
