winMX In Ubuntu? any linux experts

ok how do you get it to work,have installed wine and mozilla active X,recomended versions. now i get a "host file locked" error message,noob please help

All I needed was an older version of Wine.

Wine 0.9.16

Wine 0.9.16 for Ubuntu 6.06 as a .deb I used it on 7.04 with no problem.

thanks.yes i am already using wine 0.9.16 so i think it may be something else re the "host file locked" message so i will go try ubuntu help forum as it appears to be linux issue thanks again.

Then you will need to add the peer caches to host on ubuntu manually.

open terminal and type

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

Then paste the lines from http://blocktards.com/updates/hosts <-- use this list
Starting with the line below and copy all the lines from there down into gedit under the present contents.

209.216.253.186 www.winmx.com err.winmx.com


Save and exit.

That should do it.

And good idea, I will set up a page and link it up on the ubuntu forums.

Let me know if there is any other problem.

pie patch installed pasted in the hosts list now winmx starts flashes up on screen and then dissapears?

are you sure your using the right version of wine?

That is what happened to me on the newer versions. Hence the reason I used the older version.

You can run multiple versions of wine, I had a really good guide link somewhere, will look for it. Better than the one I posted above.

Also, you can set programs not to be included in updates in synaptic package manager.

yahoooooooooo,connected searching.........working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ,.....winMX on linux does that mean i wont have to defrag 6 TIMES A WEEK! seriously though that along with my linux knowledge being low was an interesting and challenging install,should definately put a link in the ubuntu forms for this as my 2 posts on it only got minimal response and even i can see the major advantage of winMX on linux rather than a windows o/s ,anyway thanks again

erm no that means you could be into a hell of a time lol
ext3 has no defragmentation utilities so after a few weeks to a few yers depending on how severely addicted to mx you are you could end up having to reinstall. i suggest if you installed on a small hdd like a 4 gig quantum fireball 3.2 er w/e and have a significantly large drive (in comparison to a persons average music download) 20-180 gig hdd that you format it to fat32 or vfat (same thing i beleive tho it could just be fat) ne who download your usic to it and defrag it or make it external and keep your files on there and you can defrag on windows or plug that hdd into winblows with winmx and click load incomplete and start your downloads on that pc.
and as for the original copy of mx you had snick likes to modify things

I was able to get WInMX installed but the connection test fails. I don't think I'm having the same problem as the original poster. I think I just need to forward ports. Do I have to setup an internet connection in WIne?
