Assuming you have already added the proper entries to host file, have you tried to skip the connection test and manually set winmx up?

I didn't know I had to add things to the host file. I only used Wine's directions for installing an program. I didn't know I had to use directions specific for WinMX.

WinMX is an orphaned program, it's original creators closed shop in sept 2005. People use a variety of third party peer caches to connect.

Just follow the advice quoted below

Vladd44 wrote:http://blocktards.com/updates/hosts <-- use this list

open terminal and type

sudo gedit /etc/hosts

Then paste the lines from http://blocktards.com/updates/hosts <-- use this list
Starting with the line below and copy all the lines from there down into gedit under the present contents.

209.216.253.186 www.winmx.com err.winmx.com

Save and exit.

That should do it.

And good idea, I will set up a page and link it up on the ubuntu forums.

Let me know if there is any other problem.

I know that.

I use the WinMXWorld version.

Is using a patched version of WinMX a problem with Wine?

I'm not sure its seeing the internet because it doesn't get to the ports test. Only the part about the proxy server.

Then go ask them, I told you how to resolve it.

If the dns for winmx.com and it's subdomains have not been modified (either by a hosts file such as blocktards or someone's .dll via WmW) it will not suceed in a ports test, because it needs to connect to test servers.

Once again if you added peer caches to the hosts file you could at least isolate whether it would connect or not, but carry on.
