Win98SE Connect (install?) problems

Postby just4fun on Sat Aug 09, 2008 5:30 pm

I followed the delete everything instructions and then installed the PIE Updater and v3.53 from the specified website. Though PIE Updater indicated an install problem, evidently due to Win98SE, I did try the Manual Update (got another error indication) but I did get connected when I installed v3.53. That connection lasted for about an hour then lost it and haven't been able to re-connect since. I went through the whole delete / install thing again, but nada. I manually repopulated the HOST file with the blocktards list. Rebooted, but still no connection.

So I ask you, where do I go from here? Making a secondary connection, don't have a firewall but do have a CA AV app, ETrust.

PGlite does not work on 9x, that is the reason for the error on the auto updater.

If the hosts file is populated with the blocktards list the problem is not related to the patch.

Can you give more system details?

Not all is lost. Left the yellow light blinking all night, and VOILA!, this morning the green light was on. Connection time showed it had been connected for 2+ hrs. Has stayed connected for 6+ hours. However, very little action (hits) on a file of Incompletes.

I take it the Install instructions should have noted that Win98 users should bypass the PIE Auto Updater installation, install 3.53 and go to the blocktards site to manually update the Host file?

Are there other cache URL's available for the Host file that could improve MinMX's search & transfer performance?

For future reference, where should 98 users go to find updates to the blocktards' file?

Thanks for your response.

If you are connected, you are connected.

Additions of other peer caches will not improve or devolve search ability etc.

They are only used to connect, searches etc do not go through them. In that aspect it is a decentralized system with searches being sorted through primary users.

If you are having trouble it would be most likely router or connectivity issues.

please find and aquire anything but 9x.. anything.
The benefits of going over anything involving a 9 are imeasurable.
You can even delete files by the thousands at once without the system freezing.
(that annoying problem is why I upgraded to the most advanced system available, win2k)
and its so stable I dont upgrade any further, they can keep XP and Vista.
Just to not draw the wrath of XP fanpeeps, 2k == XP, its just faster and less bloated, missing all the wonderful features that XP has like DRM, and drivers.
Drivers are as thick as fleas on a bluetick hound on the interwebs though.
And who would ever want DRM.
Worried about old software missing the latest security updates?
Disable any and all scripting in the browsers.
That takes care of 99.99999999999999% of internet exploits past, present and future.
(Don't tell M$ though, they rely on updates to generate revenue for a system that usually allows anyone from anywhere in the world to just diddle around with your hard drive as they see fit)

WinMX runs reasonably well in wine.

Thanks for the advice, but with only 96MB of RAM and a 4.2 GB HDD, 98SE is about all this old Dude can drive, besides, I have the OS CD's and it is stable. Thanks to VLadd44's past posts, WinMX is back up, connected and just chugging along. Upgraded from 98FE to get USB 2.0 so I could attach an 8GB Flash drive. That solved the download limitations of the small HDD and provides transporatability of the files to my XP machine, which has an external 750GB HDD.

Of course, if someone GAVE me a legitimate copy of 2K, I might give it a try.
