Why does WinMX give my graphics schizophrenia?

Postby Lovepeaceguru on Thu Aug 17, 2006 3:19 am

Can anyone explain why, despite my fancy, expensive graphics card, WinMX just sends my display crazy?

As I scroll through my main window gret chunks of lines disappear and reappear. If I hit a button, the whole screen will reverse, etc, etc. etc. Nione of it seems to stop WinMX from functioniung and if I hide the windows then everything will return to normal. But why? And is there anything I can do to bring it back under control?

I am so glad you are having the SAME problem.

I've been wanting to ask this quesion for a long long time but I thought maybe it's just my computer.

I AM GLAD I am not the only person to have experienced this.

Another related issue I have experienced is when I click on

SEARCH FOR ALTERNATE

I get this long file name that overlaps everything all the way from the left to the right edge

I NOTICED that this only happens IF:

1. WinMX has been on for a long time (Days)
2. MX Monitor has been on TOO during that time

My fix is to:

Shut down WinMX and Mx Monitor and run WinMX WITHOUT Mx Monitor (Which I don't like to do)

BECAUSE once you turn Mx Monitor back on, it starts back going crazy again

OR

Shut down the PC, reboot and re-run WinMX and MX Monitor again.

I hate it when this happens because IT ALWAYS HAPPENS when I have several GOOD DL going and several DL Qs at POSITION 1 to 5!!

:(

Well I suppose I'm glad it's not just me but does anyone have a solution?

It looks much like a memory leak in WinMx, decreasing the backscrol limit in the chat window (commands-backscrol limit) seems to help a little. It lasts longer before the problem starts.
Going to WinMx.exe properties-compatibility and tick no visual schemes (trying to translate from dutch) solves the problem.
Only difference you might notice are somewhat sharper edges of the WinMx windows.

Almost forgot, rightclick the Winmx titlebar and select reset all windows also might give a temporary solution.

I was also happy to find this question and responses because I thought it was just ME that was having this problem! WinMX (I am using v3.54 Beta now but it happens with v3.53 also) works fine for a day or two but then everything goes haywire on my screen and I have to do a re-boot to put things back the way they were. I was chatting with someone on-line who explained to me that it is being caused by the amount of GDI Objects which WinMX allows to continually run and I should keep an eye on them using CTRL+ALT+DEL, Processes TAB, View, Select Columns, Tick off GDI Objects and then check how many GDI Objects are running under the WinMX process. This chap told me that all would be OK until the GDI Objects hit 10,000 + and he was right... the system started acting crazy at 10,xxx. I have tried to find a way to limit these processes but so far no luck. I am now going to try the suggestion above (No Visual Themes) and hope for the best! Thanks!

I think that this might just work! I have been running WinMX with "No Visual Themes" for a few hours now and the GDI Objects are at 170 right now. They would have already been way over 1000 by this time! Thanks for the info Ome_Leo! :D

I used to have this problem. It happens on Windiows XP boxes when MX monitor is running for a while.
SOLUTION!!!!: Set your desktop appearance to Windows classic style: Display properties > appearance tab > Windows and buttons: "Windows Classic style".
