Which media player to rip?

Postby Guest on Tue Oct 25, 2005 5:21 pm

What software would the people here recommend to rip CDs
I use Nero to burn but I'm at aloss to find a media player other than dare i say it ms media player to rip CDs for my IRiver

I've been ripping at 320 and will argue with anyone there is a qulaity difference from 192 but I'm intrigued to test the differences.
Especially as folk like Vlad etc claim 192 is just as good.

Looking forward to the replys.

Another thing, is it just me or have others stopped using winamp since AOL got there claws into it

WMP 10 is as good as any (better than most) player for ripping (and burning CDA). It is no longer restricted to wma .. you can set mp3 as default format in settings. 8)

I use RealPlayer to rip and burn (music that I have purchased and have license to), and print my jewel cases...but then I'm just a lazy old fart....

For all of my "personal family home movies" (not copyrighted movies, I would never burn illegal copies of those) I use Sonic RecordNow... :P

I sometimes use cdex but just as good and better organized is iTunes..it isn't just for buying music online. You can use it for ripping (including mp3) and burning. All functions are FREE! except buying music. 8)

Do it the way that the major release groups do, that is:

1. Rip to wave using Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.org/);

2. Encode wave to mp3 using Lame (http://mitiok.cjb.net/);

3. Properly name and add tagging info (ID3v1 & ID3v2) to the mp3 using tools such as The GodFather (http://users.otenet.gr/~jtcliper/tgf/).

Use VBR encoding wherever possible as it is superior to ABR or CBR encoding in terms of audio quality.

The release groups use the following settings in Lame: lame --preset standard

This preset has been tested by users and agreed to be the best setting (audio qualitywise) for the majority of types of music.

If the command line usage of lame scares you then you can opt to use a GUI frontend like RazorLame: (http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php).

TIPS

a. One of the best drives for ripping audio cds is made by LiteOn, so get one of these if you can;

b. Never rip from line-in, radio, tv or internet broadcasts if you can help it. If you do, then properly indicate this when naming and tagging your mp3s;

c. Setup the ripper program to include some kind of sync detection and error correction;

d. Always test your mp3s by playing them before archiving or sending them out into the wild.

Joe... WMP and I-Tunes should not be used for ripping CD->MP3 because both use crappy MP3 encoders.

Also, neither of them is "secure".

One should definitely use CDex or Exact Audio Copy, with the LAME encoder.

I agree .. if you don't know what you're doing then LAME is the best free codec and probably best to use for security BUT mp3 in any codec contains no marker that you don't allow to be put there. WMP likes to copy protect but "Just say no" :laugh:
