IE virus wtfvs

Postby artkolkovk on Wed Apr 23, 2008 9:56 am

Hey guys I had an old laptop running XP Pro. A couple of weeks ago, every time I would connect to the internet via DSL or wireless, the hard drive light would come on - as if it were writing something to the hard drive. It would cause IE to run slower than dial-up. I looked in task manager and although the CPU usage was high, there didn't seem to be a process listed that was using it. I used LavaSoft Adaware to scan on a regular basis as well as Norton 2005. I eventually gave up and bought a new laptop (Vista Home), which now has the same problem. It is obviously related to something that I copied over to the new computer from the old computer. But the things is, Norton Internet security isn't picking up a virus. I used it to scan everything before copying it on to the new computer. Has anyone heard of such a thing or had the same problem? I'd much rather be able to find and remove the problem rather than restore.

Thanks!

Try turning Norton off & see if IE speeds up. (I hope you're using IE7.. it's secure, IE6 isn't)
Norton runs so many sub-processes that it can literally take over CPU.
If that works I suggest you switch to a lighter running Anti-vir like avast! Home Edition.
Also, try Process Explorer, it does a better job of reporting who's doin' what than the Task Manager ... both FREE

Norton is notorious for sluggish scans and generally missing viri, which isnt good as thats its job, why not take a moment to run an online scan to ensure your pc is clean:

http://www.pandasecurity.com

Hit the active scan bottom right of the screen and follow the instructions. This scan will scan your system, remove any serious threats and report any spyware/adaware issues back to you, and ofc its free.

Personally, whilst avast and avg are OK, i prefer to pay a small amount yearly for Panda titanium, its a great antivirus, built in firewall and it removes adaware and spyware actively, meaning you wont need to bother running separate scans.

I really should try for a job in Panda marketing dept. :D

you said you had wireless....
theres a packet cache on your system wich explains the hard drive writes and if both the modem and the router have a NAT then they could be conflicted and causing your internet to takle a severe speed cut, as far as files being copied over its highly unlikely unless you have used all of those files and replaced the registry key entries
who needs a toilet when you have mando's mouth?
