Video Hitch

Postby mjolnir13 on Mon Apr 12, 2004 11:28 am

I am using Windows Media Player and have been for a while. I notced a day or two ago that my video files are suddenly hitching: namely, the video will freeze for a second or two while the audio track continues. They the video will speed up until it rematches the audio.

I thought it was only on certain files, but have now noticed it happening on every video file I play.

Thanks in advance for any help with this matter.

Well you didn't give much info on what you meant by every video file you play, as is ALL avis, mpegs, etc? I tend to want to guess that you have an old version of a codec you need or else a direct show filter like ffdshow (sorry to all the supporters out there, but uggh) is playing your video files instead of the codecs and it is not configured properly or is conflicting. It would be helpful if you could be more exact as to whether the files are ALL kinds of formats (which would lead me to think there might be a prob with your wmp or even a graphics card driver), or whether it is with certain formats like avi or mpeg. Maybe all the files you viewed were divx or xvid, let's say, and some app you installed overwrote the codec you need with a substitute (it does happen quite often believe it or not).

First I would use GSpot (youcan read about how to use it and download it here: http://www.rita.lt/video_tools/help/gspot.htm) and don't just take a look at what codec the file requires, make sure to render it and take a look at what your system is actually using to play the files.

If everything is ok with the codecs, see if another player does the same thing.

Yes, I did mean every format. And, yes, it does happen on another player. I just tried a few in Gspot.

The majority are showing the Video Codec as ffdshow in the rendering section, which means it has replaced the original codec.

Should I reinstall all the codes or just remove and reinstall ffdshow?

Thank you for your time.

Gack, that dreaded ffdshow...lol

Read this page and then you can decide whether or not you want to remove it, I don't want to be responsible for persuading you into one thing or another (smirk).

Just remember that if you do decide to remove ffdshow and some of your files don't play or are missing video or audio, it will probably mean that you never had the codecs those files use to begin with, not that there is something wrong with the files. If you're new to codecs you can find all the information you need here:

I figured you'd respond in that way from a few other statements. (And I do love that "GACK" -- must use it sometime -- very expressive!!!)

So, that leaves some decisions to be made. The only Codec packs I've really used is the Nimeo Build 8 and DivX. That's to the advice given about green screens here on Vladd44, the ffdshow is a separate installation.

After reading your last message, I followed your threads and came across you Ace Mega Pack. Would I be better off removing Nimeo & FFD and installing just the Ace Pack?

FFdshow does comes with the Nimopack (and I know some of the pages on Vladd's mention the nimopack but as Vladd would be the first to tell you he's very liberal and respects other opinions - and he knows I usually have different ones anyway...lol)... What's worse is that packs like Nimo come with old versions of ffdshow, buggy ones. If you ever did want to use or go back to ffdshow, I would at least get the latest version and read about configuring it so it gives you the least amount of trouble. Nimo and most other packs also include divx, but if you install divx from a codec pack you are usually installing the spyware version. When you install things from a codec pack is is always best to use a pack which allows custom installation and only install what you need, because where codecs are concerned, more is not better.

Ffdshow comes with most packs, it comes with the AceMegaCodecs pack as well, although it is not checked as one of the defaults to install - you would have to check it yourself in you want to install it. If you decide to get the AcePack, I have a txt file inside suggesting what not to install, etc. And the AceMegaPack has an aggressive uninstaller as well, so if you decide to install it you can use that and it will uninstall everything you don't want as well as the older versions of codecs.

Great, I love passing on my quirks... Think of me every time you use it... AUuuwooooo! 8)

Yes, I know about the older versions, which is why I've always tried to install the most recent Ffdshow (ergo, a separate installation) -- especially after spending months trying to figure out the green screen thingy.

However, if that is really what is causing this "hitch" (which seems to be getting worse), then there's really not much of a choice, is there?

I will keep you informed of further developments.

And thanks once again for your time.

I didn't say that definitely IS the problem, but I would think that it is. There could be other reasons too, but I would try the codec solution first, it's easiest.

Please do, and no need to thank me. It's my job (although somehow a paycheck never seems to arrive - maybe Vladd has a wrong address for me? )

I wondered where that money was coming from!!!!

On a serious note, if this doesn't work, then it'll be the tried and true "uninstall and reinstall" windows....then I won't have to worry about which codecs to use.
