Video Bitrates

Postby mjolnir13 on Thu Jan 05, 2006 11:22 am

I recently purchased a Philips Progressive Scan DVD player which plays video files without conversion to DVD format. However, I've recently discovered that certain files do not play correctly. When this happened with files from the same show, I ran both through GSPOT and discovered that the only difference was that the file that was "scrambled" was encoded at a lower bitrate than the one that played fine. I've even updated the firmware to no avail.

So, I'm wondering if I can convert the problem files to a higher bitrate and what program would be recommended.

Thanks much.

It will be the way the file was encoded, not the bitrate. The biggest problems right now with player compatability are with xvids, depending on how the codec was set up by the person who encoded it to avi. Some xvids will play on ESS chipset dvd players and some on non-ESS chipset dvd players. Also if they were encoded using Q-Pel and/or Global Motion Control most player as of yet do not support these functions. Unfortunately from what I read the latest beta versions of divx will also support Qpel settings, so we will probablly see an increase in divx files not playing on mpeg4 standalones as well. What I usually do with these files is stick them in AutoGK and reencode them to divx. You can reencode using xvid too, but make sure you know whether your dvd player has an ESS chipset or not, you will be asked upon installation of AutoGK whether you want xvid to encode for ESS chipsets or not. Most avi-supported dvd players on the market today are ESS chipset ones.
