Uploading on network

I think I am sure and familiar with how you put your files on the player. Just to make sure all you really have to do is share them don't you? But when you share them they are only coming from one host, so how long does it take for another person to actually find that song or picture. Like me I'm sharing a file which no-one has and I'm definitely sure about that. I went to my friends house, went to ares and searched it while this computer was still on and running ares. I waited for at least 3minutes before i gave up. How long does it take for your file to actually appear on the network.
