could someone please help i am running windows98se i go into windows c:windows to replace file but there are 2 hosts/sam files there 1 is "HOSTS.SAM" and the otheris "LMHOSTS.SAM"
could someone please tell me do i need to replace both (HOSTS.SAM & LMHOSTS.SAM) or just the HOSTS.SAM file ??????
thanks for your help

You have to replace the hosts file (with no extension)

Just put it there; if you already have one, it will ask if you want to replace it.

Also, if your windows program is not on C: put the host where it is.

The patch worked perfectly for me .... got connected right away with a primary connection. Can get in to chatrooms, although only saw approximately 10 ... was able to browse, whois, upload and download. Not a lot available as yet but assume this will improve as people rejoin the community. Only feature that did not seem to work for me was my being able to adjust bandwidth for people downloading from me, this option was greyed out ... but hey I can live with that. Thanks for the great work!

The patch was not required for some but it was required for others
you can fix it manually or get the updated version:

Manually:
There is a problem with the patch you can edit it make the necessary changes and it works.
If you downloaded the patch and placed it in it's proper directory here is what you can do to fix it.

goto my computer
go to hosts file in directory my case windows xp
c: windows system32 drivers etc hosts
double click on hosts
a list will come up choose program you want to edit this
choose wordpad
make the corrections ( you need a space between each IP )
there is also a c missing

after the changes it worked in a few seconds.
good luck

Hi Carquip,
I don't know as to why it bogged your computer down, but can I make one suggestion that I noticed from your PC spec. Install SP 2 for your computers security.

Take care
