How can I modify the hosts file on my PC?
-------------------------------------------------
Try to locate any existing hosts file on your computer:
Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000/XP)

NOTE: Hosts is the name of the hosts file and not another directory name. It does not have an extension (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames) and so appears to be another directory in the example above.

CAUTION: We recommend that you back it up onto a floppy or into another directory on your hard drive so that you may restore it if you do not like the results, or in case something else goes wrong while you are trying to set this up. It is always better to be safe than sorry in the event of an unforeseen mishap. Please make a backup copy.

Open your hosts file in Notepad. It should look something like this when you open it:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
You can now add addresses to your Hosts file. For example:

65.77.208.240 hardhathosting.com www.hardhathosting.com
216.239.37.99 google.com www.google.com
Once you make your changes, save the hosts file and restart your web browser.

Still not working for me here.... :(

As far as I can tell there is no reasn why the old winmx would work and the new one not for some people. The actual change that made this work is tiny.

Sometimes however it seems to take a while, and a system restart may help.

For people who can't figure out how to apply the fix.

Use the windows built in search for "hosts" remove the "" of course then copy the fixed host file into that directory. Restart your pc then run winmx, and wait, if it takes a very long time (more than 20 mins) restart pc... rinse and repeat as needed.

Ok, I tried your patch and it did nothing. Any suggestion why? I use Primary and i'm on Windows XP but I map my own ports.

There were a couple of spaces missing from the file I just downloaded. Once I added those (the columns should all line up), mine started up instantly and connected Primary.
P=5 S=12

Thanks for the patch!!!

Also, for Win2000Pro, I had to stop the "DNS Client" service to get Win to see the new file.

there is a problem with the patch you can edit it make the necessary changes and it works.

If you downloaded the patch and placed it in it's proper directory here is what you can do to fix it.

goto my computer
go to hosts file in directory my case windows xp
c: windows system32 drivers etc hosts
double click on hosts
a list will come up choose program you want to edit this
choose wordpad
make the corrections ( you need a space between each IP )
there is also a c missing

after the changes it worked in a few seconds.

good luck

A BIG THANK YOU!

I've got a connection to the network right now. I
don't use WinMX for downloading all that much,
preferring Usenet, but I share some 4900+ files.

Seems even one of the file fakers has caught on to
the workaround - I've got hits in PeerGuardian
for Globix, and dozens of entries in my Sygate
packet log from them as well.

Hello just wanted to send a thank you to all those involved in this project with the hosts file and everything else to help us keep winmx alive. So from Myself and All of my ReallGames family THANK YOU JOB WELL DONE :D. For those who are having problems getting this to work two suggestions for ya to try. 1> After replacing your current hosts file i recommend restarting your computer. 2> After restart go to network connections and disable then reenable your local area connection (Meant for those who connect thru a broadband connection or have a network like i do). I also ask for now anyway those who are able to connect primary please do so cuz there are alot of people who can only connect secondary and they need our help. Time to put aside petty differences we may have had in the past between clans rooms whatever and unite to keep winmx alive and strong. Thanks everyone for listening to me much appreciated.
