HI, I've tried the patch and further instructions, such as the DNS thingy and checking for the DLL file or whatever. My WinMX is still not working. I have no technical knowledge but haven't liked any of the other P2P networks, can anyone help?

Nothing has changed with the peer caches that shoul dhave that effect. The most likely culprit would be some sort of anti-spyware software that has locked the HOSTS file and restores it to its original setting either after a certain amount of time has passed, or it was restored when you rebooted.
If this is the case, try disabling that anti-spyware program and running the patch again. Don't forget to reactivate the program after you're done.
If the program informs you that there were changes made to the hosts file and displays the changes, keep all changes that have "winmx.com" in them- they were added by the patch.
If you see changes that do NOT have winmx.com in them, they are an actual hijack attempt and should not be kept.

I'm really sad, but my mx doesn't connect too, although i tried all possibilities like put tht dns entry manuel ..
Crying or Very sad

If you installed it manually, make sure you modified the file HOSTS which has no extension. There could be two other files in the same location, one called HOSTS.SAM and another called LMHOSTS. Changing either of these files will not help you to connect.

If you verify that the proper file was modified and you still cannot connect, please let us know so that we can help you further.

www.winmxgroup.com - that patch does not depend on modifying your system so you won't have those issues with spyware programs etc, give that a try...

if you are having any problems at all connecting then this is the first thing you should try as this works in over 99% of cases

Install one of the 3 patches available on the following site.
It offers all available fixes and doesn't discriminate.

2 patches are packaged with easy to use installers and one is just a hosts file.

I am back too! Lost the connection once after installing the patch. But deleting it and subsequentlly reinstalling, as well as changing the ports solved the problem. But I wonder why my CPU is generating so much heat. Anyone knows? Thx.

Running WinMx v3.31 on W98SE

Got up today and checked my IM with an offline request looking for some obscure group from Michigan called the Rockets (great remake of tune "Oh Well"). Know I occasionally download songs they came to me to find it since they can't find it thru any record stores (too old and too local a band I guess). I clicked on the icon and nothing. Hmmm.... I guess I will get that update now. But wait... I haven't been connected to WinMX in months so I had no idea what was going on.

After reading message boards to find out what happened and the best solution I found this message board and thread. I was afraid to download a different P2P program because of the nasty bugs and computer crash related to Kazaa a couple years back. I wanted my WinMX and was bummed. Never a bug, ad or virus, but I am not a power user either.

So I wanted a piece of the PIE. I used the 2.6 patch after making sure my WinMX was already backed up on CD (I've learned an upgrade was not always an improvement and wanted to go back to old versions).

I found:
1. Easy installation (almost idiot proof)
2. Connected right away
3. WinMX LIVE AND LOVING IT!

My OT 2 cents:
I grew up in the 80's. I taped songs off the radio. I have more radio songs on cassette than pre-recorded. I used to buy single 45's from the music store. I bought their t-shirts, went to the concerts, watched MTV when it had 23 hours of videos and 1 hour of music news.

Now I download off the internet. I buy CDs from those artists that have a bunch of songs I like. I still go to concerts and buy their t-shirts. Music plays on my computer while I watch Next on MTV.

Downloading (other than the quality issues) is the same as taping off the radio onto cassette and saving a video onto VHS. These arguments were made when the record button was invented and I'm sure our grandchildren will be fighting the same war years to come.

Good work everyone! America is about money, freedom and choice. Let's keep it that way.

In WinMX, click on "settings" then "WinMX Peer Network" and look on the right at "search thread duty cycle"
This defaults to 80% when you install WinMX, meaning that WinMX can use up to 80% of your CPU resources for searching. 80% is more than needed in most cases. By dropping this to a lower number, your CPU will spend more time idle or devoted to other software. This will generally result in it generating less heat.
