Oh dear Ready, hold on and I,ll see if we can save you another headache.

http://www.funkytoad.com/hoster.htm

This is a manual host file editor , but you will only need to open it to Make hosts read only on your file, it can make you a backup too while you at it :D

Click that button at the top right and re-run your installer to complete the job.
(you can lock it again if you choose by running Hoster again.)

Oh and grab a beer now all the hard work is done

I am using Win ME, I can find old hosts file in windows, but no patch works. I've tried autoinstaller & manual. There's a new installer just for win98/ME at winmxworld, tried didn't work- Keep getting error:cannot WRITE to hosts file. I can't edit(rename, delete, replace)with new hosts, nothing. I open hosts file(in notepad & it's empty, nothing in it,yet I can't edit it either, I tried to paste stuff from new hosts file, won't let me. I also have the HOSTS.SAM file. I open that in notepad & it has the microsoft stuff in it that was in the forum. Please help!!!!!!!!!

One of two problems: first, most likely you don't have administrator right to the system and therefore can't change system files. Second, as a system file it may be locked by another process. There is a new installer in the works that will deal with the second problem. Expect it by the end of the month at the latest.

OK thanks will be waiting & good job

perhaps the automatic installer at http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php would serve your needs better than a manual install.

When you rid the system of the ws2_32.dll what are you planning to do with the users that Pie does not work for. I have tried every version of your host files and every time i reboot my system it reverts back to the original XP version. I cannot connect with your Pie and its host files. I have followed your directions about the DNS flush and even went into to services and followed those directions. I am not some young muppet, I am 41 years old and I can do most things on a computer.

I even took the advice to go to your room and ask people. I was asked straight away if I even knew what a host file was and where it was.

If you want to take over WinMX and get rid of the fix that works for me, then you better have a fix that will work for everybody.

I'm probably wasting my time with this post, because I know you will simply say I am doing something wrong, but if I am then it is your instructions that I am following.

For those who u believe yr winmx is corrupted ...
Get a new fresh uncorrupted winmx from here : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/winmxmirror.php

If yr winmx cannot connect ... follow these steps :

Step 1: Check if this file is in yr winmx folder ... ws2_32.dll ... if it is there ... pls delete it. (u may need to close winmx to do this)

Pls remove the ws2_32.dll ONLY from yr WinMX folder (yr WinMx folder is the one containing yr winmx.exe which u r running WinMX from) and do not delete it from anywhere else.

Step 2 : Pls install pie patch 2.6 from here : FIX
Current fix to WinMX situation http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php
Click Pie Automatic Installation

Step 3 : Pls restart yr winmx

Step 4 : To set yr winmx settings :
Set winmx settings to no proxy used, TCP=16699 and UDP=16257

A) Changing ports to 16699/16257 with no proxy selected :

1) Hit Settings (button at top of winmx screen)
2) Internet Connection > Outgoing TCP Connections > Click : Don’t use a proxy server (connect directly)
3) Incoming TCP Connections : Click the top option : Listen on port 16699 for incoming TCP Connections (type in 16699)
4) Internet Connection > In/Out UDP Packets > Click the top option : Send and receive UDP datagrams on port 16257 (type in 16257)
5) Hit Close and restart winmx

B) If u have a router ... pls map yr router to the same ports : TCP = 16699, UDP =16257

C) : Disable XP Firewall (if u r using xp) and if u have yr own firewall : to allow WinMX (If u do not have any firewall pls get Sygate firewall free here : http://smb.sygate.com/download_buy.htm and set Sygate to allow WinMX

To Disable XP Firewall :
Start > Right click My Network Places > Hit Properties > for the connection u see there (eg: LAN) right click on LAN (if it is LAN) and hit Properties > Select Advanced tab > at Windows Firewall … hit Settings > Click *Off* > hit OK.

U shd be connected after that, any probs, let us know

If all else fails … log onto winmx and heck care whether can connect or not just hit chat... ok ... enter Vladd44_69591C181E61 in the black space at Filter and hit Join ... u will enter V44 room and there, ppl can help u get connected.

I am in V44 room as Kayleigh and inter-room PR (will help when I am in, if I am not there ... there r many others who r also there to help u get connected :)

I already answered your post in another thread, but in case you didn't check back there, I'll answer again. Maybe other coming into this thread will have a similar question that my post can answer as well. :)
First, the installer is selective in which ws2_32.dll it renames. There are files with the same name used by BendMX and RCMS as well as Windows itself. However, in order for the installer to rename the file, you first have to a) download the installer, then b) run the installer on your system. If the installer finds ws2_32.dll in your WinMX directory, and if it is the patch, it is renamed to ws2_32.dl_ which renders it inert. If the person, like yourself, cannot connect with the hosts file update performed by the installer, you can either name the DLL patch back to its original form or download the DLL patch again. The installer would not interfere with this process- the only exception being if you run it again, which is not an automated process and requires the user to double-click on the installer icon.
I was oringinally planning on programming the installer with an option for the user to add it to a scheduler to check weekly for updates, which woul dhelp insure that the hosts file is never more than a week out of date. Several people shot down this idea, Vladd being one of them. The reason being that it could cause problems with people like yourself who haven't had luck with a hosts file update.

The manual version of a hosts file update will continue to be avaliable for those who like to do it themselves.

There's also the possibility- and I stress the word possibility- that this will work on your system. Your hosts file reverting to original state is usually caused by anti-spyware software protecting your system. I know that some software, such as Spy Sweeper will show each change made to the hosts file and ask you if you want to keep the changes or not. However I don't have the resources to check it against every possible program.

I've been trying to download music on my WinMX and I haven't been able. Is there a site that I can get my Free downloads from WinMX or do I have to start all over again? :(
