could someone please help i am running
windows98se
winmx v3.53
secondary (dial-up) connection
ie v6
AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic
spybot search & destroy
zonealam
i go into c:windows (not system32/drivers etc. as im running win98se <so not in sys32 but c:windows>) to replace file but there are 2 hosts/sam files, 1 is "HOSTS.SAM" and the other is "LMHOSTS.SAM" could someone please tell me do i need to replace both (HOSTS.SAM & LMHOSTS.SAM) or just the HOSTS.SAM file ?????? or what????

So, I have tried using both, the secondary only and the primary/secondary fix's.

The secondary fix works for me it takes me a few mins but I connect.

The primary/secondary fix didn't seem to work I waited quite a while but it never connected.

Is the primary/secondary fix working for people?

are either of these patches known to work on non standard ports?
(neither seems to work btw)
in one case i can ping the ip it points to.. not the other.. but even using one i can ping won't connect

Secondary patch is working but the Primary/Secondary patch hasn't worked yet... But,still trying. IT TAKES TIME TO CONNECT...

Thank You for at least helping some of the lucky ones to get connected again, but I can't and maybe it is because i am not a computer genius like some of the ones who have posted messages seem to be, I can't help it if I can't understand how to get the patch to work. I am 60 years old and have been on winmx every since Napster went down, I was sharing over 4,000 songs to other users and will keep trying to get back on winmx to keep doing so, but I don't like some of comments that have been made here to some of us who are still having problems and are looking for answers and not smart remarks like maybe you should sell your computer and take up golf or tennis. I was a Ceramic Tile Contractor for over 35 years and didn't have much time to use my computer until now so I'm sorry if I sound kind of stupid when I am asking for help. I would like to ask some of those who have placed their smart a-- comments on here if they can tile a tub enclosure or a shower stall or maybe even a simple floor? some of us have been coming here for help not dumb remarks. Thanks again to all of you who have been working very hard to get us back on-line with winmx.

Installed patch....how long is long, before it connects? (used the patch for primary and secondary).....till now....not connecting... :cry:

You go Gary! I work for a contractor and he can tile a bath enclosure as a matter of fact he's off framing right now. I had over 75 pc games, and 100's of apps. Don't worry they will get you up and running.

Hello dear friends! First of all, I'd like to thank everyone who is trying to keep the WinMx alive for all of us! Your help is a treasure. Your help is priceless! Every smart guy here appreciates, I am sure! Although I followed the instruction given, I still cannot connect. I am using Win98. Apart from the sample host file, there is a file called : hosts.20050520-235123.backup. Shall I remove it before copying the new host file given from you? Thank you for your help and reply!

I was reading all instructions and problems people do have to get a connection. I do have also a problem to get a secondary connection. Maybe if someone will be so nice and try to answer a question that was placed here before but nobody really replied to it. After WinMX was shut down some people deleted the software from their pc - as i did to. After seeing on this forum that there is hope I tried to install WinMx again. The problem is that you can not get through the test. One way is configure manually what I did and applied the patch. Nothing happened. Is it a problem that we had installed WinMx again and we can not get through the test? Can anyone give a helping hand please. BTW my system is WinXPPro SP2. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for all the work and I tried the "patch" but it didn't work for me either. I guess I'll start paying like everyone else or until someone can find a way to make a product that worked as well as WinMX! I don't like the new music anyway and the old stuff was the only thing I was interested in.

I'd be happy to answer you question

If you are having difficulty with MX it is NOT because you re-installed it. If you go through configure manually and choose that everything is firewalled, it should still connect primary. The issue for you is most likely that the server software is still very VERY much a beta (test-version).

Don't worry though. Keep checking for updates!

I was wondering... I did what it said and it worked great.

Then i closed mx to reboot my pc...now mx will not connect...any suggestions......plllllssssssssssssss
