could someone please help i am running windows98se i go into windows c:windows to replace file but there are 2 hosts/sam files there 1 is "HOSTS.SAM" and the otheris "LMHOSTS.SAM"
could someone please tell me do i need to replace both (HOSTS.SAM & LMHOSTS.SAM) or just the HOSTS.SAM file ??????

you have to go into the system32f file then into drivers then into ect and there should only be 1 file called host

this is wrong information - only allpies to win 2k and XP

the "hosts" file goes in C:\windows for win 95/98Anonymous

disregard the hosts.sam and lmhosts.sam - sam is for sample..

if you don't have a "hosts" file [with no extension] in C:\windows\ all you have to do is extract or copy the file to that subdirectory.

iv tried the patch n zip no connection, has ne1 got idea of time frame when its back online as it should cus alot have moved to other p2p..and i like mx.

arghhh.. i forgot to mention..

with win 95/98Anonymous, after you copy the hosts file to the C:\windows\ subdirectory, you have to reboot for it to take effect.

With XP you do not need to reboot, but just restart winmx.

but when i went to put it on my other comp it wouldnt work y?

i am hostin atm and my primary connection are 10 (super) on the comp that the patch wont work on

the only difference is one points to an 82.*.*.* IP and the other points ro a 205.*.*.* IP for the peercahe server.

If some people use 82* and the others use 205*, than afaik, they will be connected to totally separate wpn format networks/peer groups.

They could still join chatrooms linked to the other group, but afaik, not browse or search the iuers on the other group and not send PM either.

If this is gonna work, to keep winmx community rebust and united.. only 1 peercache can be used by all.

I am just guessing.. so correct me if I am wrong, but i think that this is how it works.

as i mentioned above.. forget about "HOSTS.SAM" and "LMHOSTS.SAM"

that are just sample files. .SAM = sample

just copy the new hosts file to C:\windows\ then reboot.

The peer cache is only needed to find initial primaries afaik.
After that the primaries shuffle around on their own. It might take a while but people using different servers should be able to find each other given the time.

ive tryd both patches only one that worked was the KM & Drac patch but that lasted an hour and ive nopt been able to connect since.

A NEW, new patch that allows you to connect as primary or secondary has been released. Thanks to KM and Darc for this event.

Just for completeness: Sabre's mod permits both primary and secondary connections (even if it has been posted for some strange reason, as it only permitted secondary connection)

as long as the peercaches share the same primaries, they can be as many as we want. we will get different networks only if the peercaches will stop sharing the same primaries
