Trouble with installing the PIE auto-updater

Postby Cathalain on Sun Jun 29, 2008 12:56 pm

I've attempted to follow the instructions as far as installing the PIE auto-updater, but when I try to begin the program, it says "There was an error while starting the application. Invalid procedure call or argument." Oddly, it then opens up like it's supposed to, but I don't think it's working properly, as WinMX never connects afterward.

I'm using XP Pro with SP3, Comodo Firewall (have turned it off to install) and Avira AV (have turned it off to install). I attempted to install under my usual VPN and then straight on my normal 'net connection (cable modem), to no avail. Still does it and it still doesn't connect. Tried searching the forum for answers, no luck. And I tried to get into the chat, but apparently that's no good either.

I was able to install a patch previously to MX before, but I've never tried it with the auto-updater. Meh. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

ETA: I had PeerGuardian 2 installed previously, would that affect it?

Hey

The MXpie auto updater uses a version of Peer Guardian, its the light version, but this will mean it will NOT run in conjunction to PG2. In addition, once installed the patch will need to complete an update to update your hosts file, this can be done by right clicking the mxpie icon in your system try and clicking the manual update options. Please note, you may need to disable your AV to do this, once its done dont forget to switch your AV back on!

Thanks for the quick reply.

Tried to shut down PG2 altogether, shut down all AV and firewalls, but I'm still getting the "invalid procedure call or argument" message. Do I need to actually uninstall PG2? I'm hesitant to do that, as I also run BT and I'm very leery of going in without it.

I looked up the error message and I'm getting indications that it's a VB error message, but that goes beyond my capability of understanding, heh.

What would be my next step? (If you need some more information I'll be happy to provide it to you.)

Thanks.

If you run PG2 already, you could consider a manual install. It is not like the peer caches change on a very regular basis.

Thanks, Vladd, that worked. I still get the error message when installing the PIE portion, but the manual install seems to have taken care of it - I now have the green light on MX. I do have the "PLEASE UPDATE" thing on the top, but I guess that can be taken care of easily enough.

I'll post again if I have further trouble. Thanks for solving this, it's appreciated. Glad to be back in the MX community. :fro
