trouble with avi files

greetings.i have all the necessary avi codecs but still have troubles with playback,even with vlc player.the audio plays fine,but the video is well behind the audio,sometimes barely moving at all.im running xp pro sp2.any suggestions,help,would be most welcome.thanks in advance

Sounds like you have either a memory problem (you need at least 256mb to run XP..512 would be better) OR your video card ain't up to scratch.

Actually, that's not strictly true as my dell laptop plays xvid/divx avi movies fine on just 128mb ram (with a little bit of system tweaking of course).

Just make sure that the chipset drivers and graphics card drivers (not the default microsoft ones) are installed for your machine. Make sure directx is up to date, and that hardware acceleration is enabled for your graphics card (type dxdiag into the run box).

Using a light weight (as in non-bloatware, but feature rich) media player like zoom player or media player classic also helps.

i hade the same problem when i played some avi's in media player power dvd but when i played them with Divx player they ran fine.
