sygate personal firewall, free version....home networking

Postby Lost Soul on Fri Dec 31, 2004 9:10 pm

Hello, been a while, i have dumped ZA Pro, and picked up the sygate personal firewall, free version at present time. I am wondering if anyone can help me set up LAN, i can access files and all on our 2 other comps, but i cannot access into this one from them. also i have programs such as cd burning programs that support network places, and will burn across a network. Would like very much to be able too use these things, but as of yet, no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

if you're on a LAN and the computer isn't directly connected to the internet then you dont need a firewall alowing down your internet/LAN access (and to a lesser extent computer) but if you're paranoid and are worried aboput someone on your LAN "hacking" (incorrect word, but its what people seem to call it) your computer then selecting the option in sygate to allow people access to your shared folders probably isn't a good idea

ky, im not concerned bout people on my LAN getting in, i want them too be able too. And believe me, even sitting behind the router, it is still very possible too be hacked, or worse. All i wanna do is allow my other comps too access my files and such, and as of yet, cant.

OK, my LAN is working now. Only thing i did, was from the sys tray, sygate icon, right click: options\ok\network neighborhood, then tick the allow others too share my files and printers box. Next reboot all comps. 1 last thing on this, KY, if youre going to reply on something like this, please understand not everyone is trying to hide what they are doing from the people they live with.

btw, A router is not a firewall, fact is, they are relatively easy too get through. they may have security settings, but that is NOT a firewall. have a nice one, see ya next time :)

actually, a NAT router is also known as a "hardware firewall" - and is the most secure firewall its possible to have, because there is no software running on it (other than what i guess would be the equivilent to an OS but with very limited functionality) for anyone to connect to making it impossible for any inbound connections to the router, and the only connections that will get to any of the LAN PC's are ones where you actually go in to the router and tell it to forward that specific port (or port range) - i have yet to hear of a company who assign all their computers external IP's and install firewalls on them all, they just shove a NAT router in instead because its more secure, not to mention cheaper - lol (that plus the ARIN requirements for IP justification but thats a minor point)

only ports that really need to be blocked anyway are the file and printer sharing ones because obviously you dont want that accessable on the internet, but anything else is a waste of time blocking (i leave one of my systems in DMZ meaning all ports allowed - except for the file and printer sharing ones which are forwarded to a non-existant PC) all the talk of people just connecting to your computer and doing whatever they want is a load of crap, you can only do things that the person who is on the computer allows you to do (obviously computers dont know if you understand you are allowing something or not, but they wont do anything that aren't told to do)

Yes, i know bout the routers with the firewall built in, dont use one. Also wasnt thinking of em because i dont use em, and i wouldve mentioned it if i was :) lol. but now i know where that comment bout not needing a firewall came from, thank you. Anyway, all is good. See ya next time. :)

Also, KY, see these links: http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/NAT.html
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/f/firewall.html

Please note, there are differences between the two [2].

NAT is by defenition a firewall, because its impossible for anyone on the internet to connect to any of the systems on the LAN... the term hardware firewall is normally used to refer to a device providing NAT, although hardware firewall is a little more general and could cover other types of hardware firewalls

if for example your computers LAN IP is 192.168.0.2 then if i where to try to connect to it, i couldn't - that IP address doesn't exist on the internet... (with that example i'd actually connect to one of the computers on the LAN here, but you get my point)

AVG 6.0 Free Version will terminate on January 31, 2005. You can already download their new version. So AVG users don't get stuck when the 6.0 Version goes down.
