Still not getting connected? Help us sort out your problem.

Postby Vladd44 on Wed Sep 28, 2005 12:36 pm

The purpose of this thread is for users who are having trouble getting connected.

With some reports we may be able to isolate something unique that is causing a problem.

Please no Mindless posts, this is for information gathering purposes only.

What operating system? (95/98/2k/XP) ?
What patch are you running? (link or version # etc)
What instructions specifically did you follow? (a link would be nice)
Who is your isp?
Router?
What addons to winmx are you running?
And anything else you think might have bearing, nothing to small.

I can get connected, but I've discovered that the latest dll patch doesn't always play well with Azureus.

I was running Azureus earlier today, and tried to start up WinMx to check in on my favorite chat rooms. WinMx would open, and then immediately crash. At the time, I was downloading and seeding. When the download finished (but I was still seeding), I could open WinMx, but it wouldn't connect. If I stop all transfers, WinMx connects just fine. Also, if Azureus isn't running at all, WinMx is fine.

I'm on Windows XP pro. ISP is Charter (cable). LinkSys Router. Not running any addons at the moment, though I do have MxMoni installed. I'm currently using the ws2_32.dll patch that I got from here and put into my WinMx program folder. There are no other dll files in that folder. Oh, and this is WinMx 3.53. I have no idea if the same problem would occur with the 3.54 beta. Azureus version is 2.3.0.4

I've recreated this several times on my system, including after a fresh boot.

Regarding the newest fix dl'ed here (installxp2.2.zip):
Running Win 2000 pro english, latest sp.

Using setup.exe to replace 'hosts'. This is what happens:
The 'hosts' provided with the fix, changes to hosts.bak (none other changes, the inside of the file looks the same).

In the systemfolder the 'hosts' remain the same, and a new file called 'hosts.new' appears. The hosts.new contains the new settings (but will not work of course).

I belive this is a bug with the installer itself (may be caused by the way win 2000 works).

I also noticed the hosts-file contains tabs, not a regular space between ip-address and hostname. I'm not sure, but i belive that could cause some problems on win 2000 in some cases.

I find that I can connect as secondary for a very short while, but sadly when I hit primary I am kicked off the Razorback2 server on eMule within seconds.

So for me, secondary is the only option, but that is where I have trouble staying connected - after 10mins on secondary I lose connection!!

I am currently using the original patch that replaces the hosts in windows.
Is there a better option for me?... like puting the old hosts back and trying a new patch?.... and if so, which one??

Cheers

You may have already found the problem- now you just have to act on it! First, try replacing the tabs with spaces, since Windows wants to see a space between fields. Notepad will work fine for this. Second, maybe I'm misinterpreting what you wrote but it sounds like your system's host file wasn't ever changed- you say the one provided with the fix became hosts.bak and that hosts.new appeared. If your hosts file (the one with no extension) is write-protected that may have been the cause. Try right-clicking on it, selecting properties and un-selecting "read-only" for starters. REmember that after changing the hosts file you need to either reboot or execute the command "ipconfig /flushdns" fromt he command line. This can be done by clicking on start, click on run, and type "ipconfig /flushdns"
Hope some of this helps, Unique!

I can get connected, but I've discovered that the latest dll patch doesn't always play well with Azureus

Pixie, I had problems with the DLL patch as well. With it, I looked to be connected to the WPN but I couldn't "whois" or "browse" anyone so I went back to the hosts file change and they worked again. Have you tried or had any luck with am updated hosts file? Granted that there are a few extra step involved this way, but I'd rather do a little more work if it means that the system doesn't crash.

Debaser- people aren't staying long on secondary because there are too many secondary connections versus the number of primaries. Have you tried connecting to the WPN and eMule in different sequences? Try WPN first then eMule, and vice-versa. If you can find a way to get on primary it will solve your short connection problem, as well as some of the connection problems others are mentioning.

Maralyn and 2 people above named guest- anyone on dial-up is going to have problems until we get more people with primary connections. Unfortunately with dial-up you have no choice- with limited bandwidth, you're stuck with secondary. Each person connected primary can handle a number of secondary people, the exact number will vary but for an example my WinMX box is currently handling 16 secondary connected people. This is why people are being urged to connect primary if they can (hint, hint Debaser!)

Thanks subhuman_bob

I will try as you suggest.

I blame my ISP for me not being able to run MX primary and eMule simultaneously, because although I can get good download BW, upload is very low with NTL.

Ideally id love to stay on primary, but I am hooked on eMule as well.

I know this doesn’t really help winmx, so I should probably feel guilty.

I would imagine, or at least hope things will slowly improve for secondary, but like I said "I will try as you suggest".

Cheers

d4x and Chaos, it's good to see that at least 2 of the recent posters read Vladd's first one about information we need. Thank you both, because we can't help you if you don't give us the info we need. :)
d4x- correct me if I'm remmebering wrong, but isn't the default Windows install directory called "WinNT" instead of "Windows"? That may cause trouble with an automatic installer- the hosts file would belong in (assuming your boot drive is C:) C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts winnt, system32, drivers and etc are folders- hosts is the filename. I may be pointing out the obvious, but sometimes it's best to start with the basics.
Chaos- you may want to double-check that as well, etc is a folder. Also I've heard of conflicts with some programs, I'm not sure if WCS is one of them. Did you try connecting without it running?
This is totally doing my head in i cannot connect at all ive tried reinstalling the damn thing over and over, while it was going through set up it was initilizing a connection and couldnt find one. Please help someone i need music lol

WinMX will always fail the connection test in intitial setup or if you re-run the setup wizard. This is due to the original peer servers being down. Even if everything is set up properly, it will fail. You need to manually configure it, which it gives you the option to do once the auto config fails. Just use whatever your settings were before you reinstalled WinMX. If you had given us all the info we requested I could probably tell you what these setting would be, but you didn't so this is all the help I can give you right now.
i have followed the instructions on the page for installing the host file, but im not getting the same window box as pictured on this site. i am running windows xp....any help please?

nukleopatra- so what box are you getting?

ssurefire, Have you tried any patches? I'm guessing not. Until you install one, there's zero chance of you connecting. If you're still having trouble at that time, please follow instructions and provide us with the requested information in order to better help you.
