Mickey, I don't know why you're not seeign the contact buttons. I just sent you a PM with my contact info in it. If you didn't receive notification of this, move your mouse pointer over the menu on the left and click on "Priv. Msgs." to check for it.

I finally got it!!!! I don't know why no one recommended this before. I was using WinMX version 3.53. I remember seeing a version 3.54 as well somewhere on the Vladd sight and found and downloaded it, and instantly I was connected!!! No one ever even suggested that, but I'm on now, so thanks to all who were trying to help me but it was just a matter of downloading a different version! Go figure. I guess anyone else having the same problem as I did and using version 3.53, go get 3.54. I connected almost instantaneously!!.....Mickey

Glad to hear it!
This is weird, because the version shouldn'ty matter. Well, at least you're connected now and I'll remeber that in case someone else comes in with the same problem.

Absolutely NOTHING was working, not even the chat room. Once I downloaded and ran that 3.54 it was almost an instant connection once i entered the screen name, connection type etc! Now, let me mention this, and I only just thought of it. When WinMX went down, I waited a few weeks and decided it went the way of the original Napster, and deleted it from my computer. When I heard there was a way to connect a few weeks later, I went to TUCOWS and downloaded a version from their download site. Maybe its possible their version was defective. Once I deleted it and downloaded the 3.54 from Vladd, everything clicked instantly. I might have just had a bad copy.....Mickey

Rageful Jewel:
OS: 98
Patch: PIEpatch 2.6
link: http://www.vladd44.com/mx/peercaches.php
What instructions specifically did you follow? automatic install
ISP: SBC DSL
Router: Linksys
What addons to winmx are you running? None (that I know of)

Are you unable to connect? If so, I'm going to ask the same question I asked Ade earlier.
Fire up WinMX- do you have a message box in the upper left corner, just below the blue status bar?. . . One other important question- did you use WinMX before Frontcode went offline, Prior to Sept 20'th and if so did you change any settings or reinstall WinMX since then?

When I statrt up WinMX, there is no message box in the upper left hand corner. I also replaced the host files after I found out that WinMX was no longer operational with Frontcode. Before that I had used WinMX with no problem. The version of WinMX that I have 3.54 beta 4. Before it was 3.53.

Hi, I uninstalled winmx when I couldn't connect cause I had that prob in the past and restalling it helped, I didn't realise at the time what happened to winmx. I've since d/l the 3.53 verison and the PIEPatch 2.6 and followed the instructions on the front page of this site, just installing it and hoping it'll do the rest but I still can't connect. I have windows xp, isp=aol, no router and run bendmx as well, could that be the prob?

Thx!

BendMX should not interfere with your ability to connect, however it may be easier to sort out your problem by trying it with only WinMX installed. Since you've recently uninstalled/reinstalled this shouldn't be a major inconvenience for you.

I agree with bob here BendMX shouldn't interfere with your ability to connect, one way or the other, just be aware if you try with bend installed that it puts it's OWN WS2_32.dll in your winmx folder, which should NOT be deleted, it's required for BendMX to work.. please if you got your winmx here & pie patch, ignore that particular instruction.

As to your connection issue, what type of Internet connection do you have?

Many cable/dsl modems contain routers without it being obvious, & these often require that you either set port forwarding, or set your PC as the "default server" which causes it to forward ALL ports to you.

If you set both TCP & UDP during setup to "unable" & try making a secondary connection, you may have more luck, if it connects in this (less than ideal) configuration, you can then look at port configuration later.

I note in this list the 1.9 patched install & Pie.. these two patches are known to cause problems if used together, my advice would be pick just one. Also make sure your router is correctly set to forward these ports to your PC, otherwise downloads will indeed time out waiting for a TCP connection they can never make.

The bendmx is causing ur Pie patch not to work so u cannot connect with Pie Patch unless u rename this file ws2_32.dll or file ws2_32o.dll to something else.

Read Magic Formula here http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6216
esp the red words.

Do Steps 1-3 to get connected ... Up to step 3 u shd be reconnected :)

Any problems :
If all else fails … log onto winmx and heck care whether can connect or not just hit chat... ok ... enter Vladd44 Help Room_57FABCD81A23 in the black space at Filter and hit Join ... u will enter V44 Help Channel and there, ppl can help u get connected.

I am in V44 room as Kayleigh and inter-room PR & Support in pie ops (will help when I am in, if I am not there ... my PR Crew team r there ready to help u get connected :)

1) Uninstall yr WinMX ver. 3.54 beta 4 w/patch 1.9
It will cause u a lot of problems. Incidently, WinMX ver. 3.54 beta 4 w/patch 1.9 << this 1.9 patch is KM's dll patch which is the ws2_32.dll we ask ppl to remove in the 1st step of Magic Formula here : http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6216

2) Install pure win mx unbundled with KM's dll patch from here :
Step 1: Get a fresh copy of uncorrupted pure winmx from here : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/winmxmirror.php

3) Reinstall yr Pie patch 2.6 from here : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php

4) If u have a router ... pls map yr router to the same ports : TCP = 16699, UDP =16257

This is yr port configuration page : http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... /WINMX.htm

Go thru the Magic Formula here again to see what u missed : http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6216

One word of caution : u r using Charter as isp so this may pertain to u :

Read the last part here on this page : http://Vladd44.com/mx/red.php
which says :

*There are a few ISPs that are beginning to block all downloads as well as uploads.

The problem ISPs are SO far as follows: Cox, Optimum Online, Charter,NVI, Shaw, Rogers and Insight.*

Any problems : If all else fails just log onto winmx and heck care whether can connect or not just hit chat... ok ... enter Vladd44 Help Room_57FABCD81A23 in the black space at Filter and hit Join ... u will enter V44 Help Room and there, ppl can help u get connected.

Was your working setup from before when WinMX went down, & you reinstalled since?

If so it could be that your old setup had failed one or both of the port tests (which worked then) & you were set to compensate, by having one or both set to unable to accept. If so, you'll never have things work the way they did before, unless you either fix why it failed before (ports blocked by firewall, not forwarded by modem/router, or blocked by ISP) OR set whichever failed back to unable & settle for a secondary connection.

There are several versions out there that live in the WinMX folder, & each was written to make something happen slightly differently from how the one in Windows does..

The ONLY one that can make a difference to your ability to connect is the one in the 1.9 patch/installer at WinMXworld, because that's what it changes, how WinMX connects, & that one does conflict with the patch here & if you have both you're screwed...

The others modify completely different functions & not only don't, but CAN'T interfere with your connection, they don't contain the instructions to do it, they are there for very good reasons their respective programmers wrote them for (to give WinMX extra functions) & removing them only does harm.

Not that that's relevant to you, but I thought I'd attempt to explain what all the shouting is about...

A lack of search results and chatroom list are usually caused by a blocked UDP port- but you're connected as secondary. For the heck of it, in WinMX go to "Settings" then "Internet Connection" then "In/out UDP Packets" and click unable... exit winmx and restart, see what happens. I'm not sure how this works, but even as a secondary if you told WinMX that you could accept UDP packets it may try to do that.
All in all, I agree with what Bearded Blunder said. :)

it was working with the patch from 10-05, and had been working fine other than some could browse my files and some couldnt...when i re-installed winmx,i have it set for secondary --unable to receive... i did the manual configuration and i put the hosts file in manually, flushed dns, --everything i had done before to get it working after the 2.6 patch came out but it isnt working this time--i didnt have to do portforwarding to get it working then ...i can download from bearshare and shareaza so i know my isp isnt blocking downloads

Something has changed in one of three locations:
1) your computer- whether it be in a firewall blocking a port or a chnge in WinMX's configuration
2) your router
3) your ISP
I'm leaning towards your WinMX config being different. We all forget things we did over a month ago, and if your previous setup of WinMX on 10-05 worked I would be inclined to say that you did setup ports (even possibly just clicking on the default selections) but don't remember it now that 5 weeks have passed.
Since you've already used a manual install of the PIE patch try this- Open up your hosts file with notepad and add these two lines to it:
Code: Select all
82.195.155.5   test3201.winmx.com test3203.winmx.com test3205.winmx.com test3207.winmx.com
212.227.64.149   test3202.winmx.com test3204.winmx.com test3206.winmx.com test3208.winmx.com

Just cut-and-paste it to the end of your hosts file.
This will allow WinMX to test its ports with the peer caches, HOWEVER it only works on the default ports (TCP 6699 and UDP 6257) so far.
These 2 lines will be included in the next PIE patch release, which may very well be out before you read this post. It's already overdue.

ok i copied that to the hosts file--i got it to pull up search results that time but timed out waiting for network reply--it says it is connected but acts like it isnt? it is taking about 10 minutes to pull up search results and when you try to download, it times out waiting...it took two and a half hours to list 457 chat rooms....also, no one can connect to me to upload...i also noticed there is no olepro.dll in winmx folder--there was before..and no i didnt forget if i had forwarded the ports--i didnt have to forward them

The point of bob posting those lines to add to your hosts file is, that with them added, you can now run the setup Wiz from settings & see if your connection passes on the default ports..

olepro.dll will be one of several things, either a patch to stop you disconnecting when loading a roomlist, part of BendMX if you're running WinMX 3.31, or KM's patch if you're on 98/ME.. if it's the room listing patch it can still be got, or you could update to WinMX 3.54beta4, I think there's a link somewhere for it, which doesn't need patching for roomlist on secondary.

What isp do u use?
What is the brand name and model of yr modem as well as yr router?

Do this test :
1) Recheck to make sure yr xp firewall is disabled.
2) Then configure yr winmx settings as in the 3rd option at *If That Didn't Help* here at http://Vladd44.com/mx/timingout.php with TCP disabled, UDP disabled
3) Restart yr winmx and see if u can connect as secondary and whether u can upload at these settings.

If u can upload at these settings, thenyr isp does not block yr uploads.
If u cannot upload at these settings, then yr isp is blocking yr uploads.

Yr isp may be blocking uploads only for winmx and not other p2p networks (Bearshare is less popular and yr isp may not be bothered to block Bearshare.)

Recheck with Magic Formula here : http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6216

If u r using xp … and 3.54 beta… u shd be able to get into this room : Vladd44 Help Room_57FABCD81A23 just type it into the space right of Filter at Networks and Hit Join. The only reason why u cannot enter an Ouka room like Vladd44 Help Room_57FABCD81A23 (which is a non-winmx room) is because yr firewall is blocking it.

I am Kayleigh there as Public Relations and Support in pie ops and I can help u to upload (have already helped close to 40 upload successfully the last 2 weeks.) If I am not in, my PR Crew will be glad to assist u to upload as well :)

If u still cannot get into the V44 Help room ...
