Slow download not caused by NAT errors

Postby Zac on Sat Oct 15, 2005 6:52 pm

I've been using bittorrent for about 2 years now, for the longest time it was working just fine, recently however things haven't been going so smothly. A long while back my bit torrent downloads started acting funny, I can't pin the problem to any changes I made to my setup or setting but I'll give you a run down of the problem in case any of you know what might be causing it.

My downloads will start out as any normal bittorrent download, slowly at first and then speeding up. The problem occurs after the torrents have been going for about 2-5 minutes, all of a sudden the torrents will slow down till they are eventually at 0kbps, then begin speeding up again. This patern will continue but slowly get worse the longer the torrent is running, it will eventually get to the point where the downloads speeds dont make it back up to anything higher than 5-10k before dropping back down to 0. The same is true of my upload speed, although sometimes it will stay at a steady pace.

I'm running the latest version of Azureus, although I've tried all the other populare clients. I have a cable connection with roughly a 350kbps upload rating(Have my upload speed capped at 20k/s). I have three computers on site and as far as I know they all have the same problem (although I haven't thoroughly tested this). All three computers run off the same router which has all port forwarding setup up for my bit torrent ports. I've tested for NAT errors and recieved none and get a green rating on my downloads. This problem as you can imagine is very annoying. So if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

would love to know too, am having similar problems, and I find that web browsing or any other activity that involves the net is very intermittent or non working too. Things take days longer to download and with a lot of discarded data, sometimes 20-30% of the file!

almost seems like a denial of service type attack on us when we're active. But then again, stop the client and it all seems to start working again, maybe after an ipconfig/renew as it seems to screw the dns resolving sometimes too

Exactly the same problem here! I have come to resent that pattern. Also same thing with using the web at the same time, even when the BT speed is at 0kps, no sites will load...

If your webbrowsing is affected, limit incoming and outgoing bandwidth on your bittorrent client to about 85% of what you are capable of using.

This should allow some bw to be freed up for websites.
