shortening avi files

Hello All.
Can anybody tell me how to shorten an avi file so it will fit on
a CD??
I know how with M$ movie maker butdo not like to use it for it's SLOW and
they are then "WMV" files.

grab a program called avi chop. Its free, and yer gran could use it. This allows you to chop it into pieces that will fit onto a cd. There are many other programs which will do this, but for someone doing it for the first time, avi chop should do just fine.
