separate subtitles

Some non-english videos have "sep eng subs" in the file name, which I'm assuming means there are no subtitles but that there is a way of getting and applying them.

How is this done? What kind of subtitle files do I need to look for if there are such things?

Usually those who share movies with separate subtitles will have them shared with the same name as the movie with a .sub or .srt extension. There are also sites which have subtitles for movies available for download, sorry but I don't have any net addresses on hand, try Googling. Quite a few players like bsplayer will play subtitles with the movie if you load them, however you need to make sure the subtitles are named exactly the same as the movie (except for the extension, of course).

Ok - so if I have an .avi file and a .srt file ... can I re-encode to permanently put the subs on the .avi file, or can I only play the two together (if so, will videolan work)? I prefer to burn .avi to a data DVD to play in the stand-alone player ... but have been known to occasionally resort to viewing flics on the PC.

Yes you can reencode it to contain the subs, I don't have any ready info on the encoding but you can use VurtualDub to do it and there's plenty of info on the net about how to do it if you just google. I'm also on vacation so I don't have much time to go looking it up for you right now.

Videolan will play the subs yes, just make sure that the title of the subs and the title of the movie is exactly the same except for the extension of course.
