Really Need some help and advice!

Postby hengler on Tue Apr 22, 2008 6:49 am

Hi
I'm Phil, a Newbie, English but living in NW Spain. I've been using Bit Torrent for a long time and have never had any problems BUT:-
Last week my modem was changed by my cable company to allow Wi-Fi access to my wife's laptop in the house. Since then I've been unable to contact properly to torrent seeders and peers. The light remains yellow and consequently the download speed is very low. I have followed the instructions appertaining to Firewalls etc and, as far as I can see, the programme has full permission to pass through the firewall. How can I check this and how do I deal with a proxy server, if indeed I have one. How can I check this?
I'd be grateful for any help as I am lost and unable to download.
My operating system is Windows XP and browser is Firefox.

Thanks
hengler

Have you forwarded your BitTorrent ports through your new router?

What router? Or is it a Modem with Nat built in? Either way Make/Model and a trip to portforward.com may help. If not list details and I will post additional details.

Hi Vlad
The Router is a Thomson TWC 710 and I wouldn't know where to start. I've had a look at portforwarding.com and, to me, it's as clear as mud. I'd be grateful for some advice.
I'm also having problems connecting to internet tv channels e.g. sopcast so I suppose that that's all part of the same problem.
Cheers
Phil

hengler, goto HERE, find whichever BitTorrent client you use & follow steps. Same thing for any other applications/programs that you are having trouble connecting with. :cloudlifter

Yes thanks I've followed the instructions to the letter and although it appears that I am connected to BT the indication light stays on yellow and the download speed is very very slow. Any more hints?
Thanks

hengler, it could well be the particular torrent you are trying to download is not a well seeded one ie: the DL speed is limited by the lack of uploaders. You could try downloading a really popular torrent, you might find all is ok then, try one of the top 100 audio on PB - http://thepiratebay.org/top/100

Let us know how you get on.

Well I tried three of the Top Ten on Pirate Bay and they are all the same. The connection seems to "read" seeds nut not peers. I shall try the postforwarding procedure again. Maybe I'm missing something.
Thanks all

Success
I followed the instructions again and found out where I had gone wrong and now BT is working fine. I do however have another question. I also watch a lot of sport on various internet channels e.g. Sopcast, TVU PPMate etc. and I appear to be having a similar problem with these. I've had a look at the site again and nothing "jumps out" at me. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Once again many thanks to all for the advice.

Just checked out the first one, and I am completely talking out of my ass here, so it may or may not work.

But looking over the FAQ, have you tried forwarding port the ports them mention in the firewall section of the FAQ

For SopClient, recommends open 3900-13900 ports for inbound connections.
