1) how do you put avi on a dvd disk so that it remains in avi format - what program is required.

Seperate issue:

2) why when i have converted and burned avi to dvd format will some not play in my dvd player.

is it the dvd player?

1) Burn it as data (dvdrISO)
2) DVD format has to uphold certain standards, and I don't know what application you're using to convert your files from avi to dvd format, but if the specs, like bitrate, resolution and others, don't conform to the standard then it won't play on a standard standalone. That's why it's best to use applications that are designed specifically to encode (convert) to the format you want, and not a burning app.
