PVR'S

Postby Guest on Sat Apr 17, 2004 1:12 pm

I've got a HP Pavillion xt 993 1.8 gh, 80 gig hd, 256mb ram with dvd+r&rw. Last year installed aver tv studio. The card works great but the software is crap. I like to use it for some recording but sometimes the timer works sometimes not. Anyone know of any decent software out there? Tried showshifter and snapstream but wasn't really happy with them. Would like something that records to avi. Any thoughts i'd like to hear. Peace! ps i'm running xp pro.

Yes Dap i read the thread when i did a search. Might not be making myself clear. looking for decent software that will let me do timed recordings like a vcr. The software that came with my card only works when it wants to. Peace!

Earl, you did make yourself clear, capturing is capturing, it doesn't matter if it's realtime tv or vhs - what is most important is as I said, the codec you use, I recommend Huffy lossless codec or Morgan MJPEG. Meaning to get the best quality I would STILL capture separately first and then reencode the large "uncompressed" avi with vdub for sharing. ANd as I mentioned in the thread above, some capture software works better with some capture cards than others, and some codecs work better with some cards, for instance most people that I know of swear by the Huffy codec, but my card doesn't like it. I found Morgan MJPEG compressor to be liked by my card, as well as Cam Studio. It is actually the codec that is more important during recording (capturing) than the software, as long as the software can capture at high resolution - it's the codec which is doing the work.

But if you say your capturing (recording) software isn't good, all I can recommend is to try and get hold of others and see which one works best for you. Good apps are Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. You can try WInFast PVR (I think that one might even be free). Many people use Ulead Studios but I personally don't think it's that great. Another app that is quite good is MyDVD (although I don't remember if you can set the time on that one, I'm almost positive you can set the timer with all the others mentioned above).

You can also check http://www.dvdrhelp.com for a list of capture software.

No problem Earl... I know I have to sit down and write a capture and encode to avi guide, but I keep putting it off simply because so much depends on the person's capture card's capabilities and quirks, there are so many ifs and buts that it's hard to generalize. I'll have to do it sooner of later though :?
