Prevention Is Better Than Cure !

Postby CoalDust on Wed Aug 24, 2005 6:53 pm

Folks, in the last couple of days I have had many folks all with similar problems, and ones that are preventable at that .

Could we all make sure our antivirus and anti spyware programs are up to date and switched on, also the same with those firewalls.

I am not sure why theres so many about but I have my suspicions

If you need help please post here and we will be pleased to help you get, and stay, protected

Heres some free antivirus vendors

http://www.free-av.com/

http://www.avast.com/i_kat_207.php?lang=ENG

And as for spyware get some of these items to scan regularly for unwanted visitors

Please dont put installing protection off, do it today or pay later :!:

Definitely good advice Coaldust. :) Although I would certainly hope that all of our regs here already have a good working knowledge of internet protection, we do still get our share of newbies who come here for advice.
Thanks for the links and info.

Also, make sure your running a good firewall, Sygate is generally the FW of choice, simple to use and free - http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Personally i still prefer to use Panada titanium 2005 over any of the free anti virus, as a bonus it now detects and removes spyware/addaware as it arrives on your system, no substitiute for one of the above scanners, but a nice addition - www.pandasoftware.com

100% right Nobby, 8)
A decent firewall is a neccesity these days as new worms/viruses can find a way to enter your sytsem one way or the other, but making sure they dont allow outgoing connections to be established is often a more important factor, having your credit card and personal details going to attackers is worse than having to deal with a sluggish system.

a firewall is only necessary if you install Trojans and crap on your system, in which case simply using a firewall to block them is really not an ideal situation

even a clean windows system wont just magically get infected with loads of stuff, it'll only get infected by what you download and install on it, assuming you install the RPC patch, as that is the only bug that allows remote execution... that one was quite a major f**k up, even by M$ standards :-P

If only what you said was the whole picture KM :?

I remember last year warning folks about malicous windows media player files that contacted a site to download trojans that windows though was DRM info ...
I,m sure our forum readers could add more horrors.

i have actually downloaded a couple of those myself, but the huge warning notice is a bit of a giveaway :-) (and from what i've seen there is only "one type of file" that it is common to find that sort of thing in...)

but a firewall wont stop you going and downloading something, not downloading viruses and trojans etc is a much better idea than thinking a firewall will prevent them doing anything, it isn't hard at all for them to disable any antivirus and any firewalls you have installed, and there are many viruses etc that do it...

If you ask me, half of the software above contains backdoors and built-in spyware which companies use to mine your private information and send rat reports to other companies and the government.

Now it all makes sense.

The Federal Communications Commission thinks you have the right to use software on your computer only if the FBI approves.

Did a google search and there are plenty of Apps claiming to "Easily" remove CasClient .. looks like most (or ALL) of them are of the ilk that says "We'll do a FREE scan for ya, but you gotta PAY to remove it". Guess you just gotta try each one til you find one that will do it for free! (OR pay if you got more money than brains) I've used those Apps in the past to tell me where the bad guy is .. then I remove it myself for free 8)

For one of the best www.pandasoftware.com try running the active scan, the only thing i cant be sure of is if it will actually remove it free or not, since i pay for Panda, i dont know how far the free service goes.

K... cheers guys,

Your comments first joe, i did a search from one of the spyremovers i found on google, what i got is casclient has been found on your computer, press delete now to subscribe to our service.... bah to that, i took the info they gave me which was, C:\windows\casclient.dll... i found that to be bollocks, im no computer expert, but ive had a look in every folder and file in my windows folder, even hidden ones, then done a windows search and still nope, no files match that ...so im a bit more puzzled, is that my wrong doing? am i missing something??....

What i did find is a file called CCLIE.dll .... i took a wild guess that could be it... so i done the deed of deleting it, only for it to say "cannot delete this file, its being used by another programme" Soooo i went to running prog's... and nout by that name is running. thanks for your help tho pal :D

K nobby tried panda software and it did not pick up on the Casclient, just a load of other shite thats in my system, which it said it had deleted... so wuu huu, one good result... Thanks pal :D
