IS IT POSSIBLE

I have recently obtained a video clip from a friend .the clip is far too dark and i would like to make it lighter and more visible
Is there a way to enhance it to improve the brightness and contrast
any software considered but preferably FREEWARE

The DivX 5 codec and DivX 5 player have postprocessing options that will lighten the video, improve contrast, etc. However, since each frame is processed in real time (as you watch the movie) it is processer intensive (it might make the video lose sync with audio or cause jerkyness).
