Poor newbie needs help. :(

Postby Poor_speaker on Thu Jul 27, 2006 3:36 pm

Hi, thanks for entering in my post, I am in need of help.

The problem that I have is that my computer can't play sounds normally anymore (it use to play them).

This is the last thing I did when it happened:

I installed FFDShow to flip some video I was getting upside down as Freez suggested to some guy here [why doesnt my html link work either? God, I am losing all I once knew!]; it did flip the video but my computer crashed short after I started the video, so, I rebooted the system and uninstalled FFDShow.

Since then, I can't play mp3 anymore (I got an error message from Winamp saying that "WMA codec is not installed. Download it from www.winamp.com"), I have installed several wma codecs (from microsfot, some nullsoft stuff and others) in the last days but none of them seems to fix the problem.

I have also uninstalled and re-installed my sound card drivers, but it doesn't help. I tried as-well to uninstall and install Winamp again, hoping it would install those codec it asks for, but no luck either. I still get the error message.

My computer seems to be in absolute silence; meaning, the volume control icon next to the time at the task bar doesn't appear (even though I click the option "show volume control at task bar" at my sound card properties), there is not a single sound when I open folders, IE browsers, or when I get error messages or anything, but, I think my sound card is actually installed since I have discovered that:

* I can actually play Audio Cds with windows media player, but not with winamp.

*I can't play midi files in any player.

*I can't play videos with winamp, but they are played in some others players (crystal, or wmp, for example).

Does anyone have any idea of what's going on or how can I fix it?!

I would appreciate any help very much, I play the bass and I need the computer to work with it; I need to play mp3 and midis again, besides the frustration of not knowing what's going on and having spent fruitlessly so many hours after work already these days at the computer trying to learn something about codecs, or what the hell is going on, but it seems this is to much for me.

Enlightedme with knowledge, please! :)

Ps. I hope my English is comprehensible, I try my best.

Just a matter of curiosity, don't take it to personal, I am just a curious person and finding myself in the situation of being able to either ask it or not, I simply prefer to do it:

Did I write my post wrongly or too annoyingly or is there any other reason for not having any reply (Freez?) like, that the issue I talked about doesn't seem to have any connection with what I did or...? How's the deal?

Maybe I sound pathetic but, regardless of it, it is a little bit disappointing being ignored and not knowing why. I'd have expected at least a message saying "No idea" or anything, just as a matter of politeness. But again, don't take it too personal, I just wanted to let you guys know.

Stay hale.

It's more likely nobody has any idea what the problem is .. I know I don't.

Hey poor speaker, i must confess to missing your post, still im here now, and the news is, i dont know what the trouble is either, lol sorry.

I guess though there is a few things to try:

- take a look in control panel > admin tools > event logger, and look at the logs to see if it shows any obvious errors - granted its a long shot but perhaps worth a go?

- Have you tried using the XP system restore to take the pc back to a point prior to the trouble?

- If neither of the above help why not try visiting the actual winamp support forum, if you cant get winamp answers there, you cant get them anywhere? http://www.winamp.com/support/

Post back and let us know how u get on......... :)

Poor Speaker, have u tried using VLC media player here : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ I hear they don't need any codec to play audio and video and can play virtually anything without any need to worry about codecs. Worth a try.
