Ah, that glorious time of the year is upon us again. The time of year when all good Irish/Catholics remember our beloved St. Patrick who drove all the snakes from the Emerald Isle ( with the exception of KM of course, but he doesn't count because he is a sorry assed scum sucking lacky of the British Imperialst Protestant Dogs...sorry for the insult to all of my honorable canine friends, especially Irish Setters ). I raise my glass in well wishing all of my friends (except the Brits who wouldn't know good beer if they were drowning in a vat of it), a very Happy St. Patrick's Day, may you be in heaven a half an hour before the Devil knows you're dead...and may you win the Lottery...

St. Patrick’s Day….green beer and drunkenness…would the real Patrick have been impressed? Another event in history twisted into a time of drunken debauchery.

The real “Patrick” wasn’t a Saint…as he was never officially canonized by Rome. The real “Patrick” didn’t drive snakes out of Ireland because they were never there. The real “Patrick” wasn’t even Irish…he was from Dumbarton, Scotland (just northwest of Glasgow).

But, the real “Patrick” was a missionary. When he was age 16, he was captured in a raid and sold as a slave. Patrick wrote, “Many times a day I prayed. The love of God and His fear came to me more and more, and my faith was strengthened. In a single day I would say as many as a hundred prayers, and almost as many in the night. I used to get up for prayer before daylight whatever the weather--snow, frost, rain-- without suffering any ill effects. The spirit within me was fervent."

Patrick spent six years in bondage until he escaped. In his 40’s, Patrick returned home to Ireland and began to witness to the chiefs of the Irish clan system. The belief system was primarily pagan at that time. He was successful through the blessings of God in his missionary journeys. Patrick baptized many thousands of converts and established hundreds of churches throughout Ireland. As an old man, Patrick wrote, “Those who never had a knowledge of God but worshiped idols and things impure, have now become a people of the Lord, sons of God."

So…when you celebrate today, know you celebrate the work of a great saint in Christ.

Just for the record, today isnt St Patricks day.

It interfered with Good Friday week and was celebrated on the 15th, it doesn't happen often, but this is one of those years.

Your timing sucks! If you'd told us earlier we could have been drunk both days. Rather, we would have had an excuse for having been drunk both days.

For 5 years, the students were banned from campus the week of St. Patricks day at the university I attended. Spring break was scheduled for that week and the students were forbidden to be anywhere near campus. This started because of (what the university called) a "riot"... students get drunk, drag furniture into the streets and set it on fire. It was rather petty for the university to react to the "riot." Only differed from other days because of the number of fire trucks.

The first year students were allowed to be on campus for St. Pat day after the ban was lifted, they showed true Catholic spirit by synchronously painting the entire street through the student housing area green.
