OPening Avi file sometime SLOOOWWW me down... Why?

Sometimes, not always I go to play or even move an avi movie file & it if it ever does open takes a looong time. Sometimes it makes things stop responding. What could be causing this?

That can depend on a lot of things... For instance what else you have running at the time, the compresson of the particular avi, etc. XP can also take a while to process the info from avi's because of the way it scans them if that's the OS you have.

Even when I have nothing running it will still slow way down. It may take 10 - 15+ mins to start playing the file. When I try to play the file in Real Player that &/or Explorer may both stop responding. Sometimes when I want to delete look at properties move or even copy the file explorer will sometimes stop responding. Yes my OS is XP. Are there better players to play video files in avi's especialy? Also could lack of Ram contribute to my prob? I have 256mb. Again thanks for your great help!

Ahh, well why didn't you say so in the first place? I don't know of any greater resource hog than Real Player, much more even than Windows Media Player. My favorite is BSPlayer, then VideoLan player because they are great and take so little resources. You ca download both from

What I meant was even when you've got all codecs installed some players have difficulty with DivX (especially poorly encoded DivX)
I prefer to open vids with either ZoomPlayer or mplayer2 because they can be edited & moved while playing but some DivX vids cause those two to use upwards of 50% cpu (sometimes more like 90%) and those I open with DivX player and it usually uses less than 20% leaving plenty for WinMX and FTP to run comfortably..

Actually, players have problems with any poorly encoded avi's, divx OR xvid. And for instance you need divx 3.11 or div 4 to play a div3 or 4 well, the latest divx codecs won't do it, you need those separately. But players have bigger problems usually with xvid than with divx, since xvid is an opensource codec and players have a harder time keeping up with it - even though xvid was based on divx. Sometimes you even need to use a 4cc changer on an xvid to fool a player into thinking it's divx, so the player will play the file using divx settings and won't have problems with it.

I ran across this problem a while back on my XP machine. The problem consisted of 3 major problems.

1) When opening explorer to a folder that contained many .avi files - my computer would bog down to frozen molasas speed.
2) I could delte .avi files - stupid XP always said the file was in use - even though it wasnt
3) opening the file to watch would sometimes take forever.

I searched out the problem and ran across this trick/hack

start->run-> regedit

navigate to :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler

Delete the value you find there.

This reg key will make XP attempt to gather information for explorer display, like thumbnail pic, size, res, time, etc. It also causes many problems when working with divx encoded avi files, and loops horrendously.

After i deleted the value - i had no further problem with avi folders (even though i dont have them on the puter anymore - all pure dvd's now)

If you have good memory on your puter - yo may want to consider changing explorer to open in a new process each time also, so when explorer crashes - it wont clobber your desktop

Anyway I am having that problem to a "T" Even the deleting the files sometimes It won't allow me to. The same old cannot move or delete this file because it's being used kinda message. I have noticed that sometimes when I right click the file go to properties & then change the file to a "read only" I then can move it. I will have to try out your little trick! Can't wait!
