here's the deal. I just downloaded a halo torrent and want to play the game but whenever bit-torrent starts up it says I'm uploading something. is it supposed to do this? if so how long does it usually take on a dsl connection going around 180kbps.? Thank you all for the info ahead of time.

Has the file completed yet? As long as its complete, a legit copy, and you have installed it correctly it should play fine (assuming your puter meets the requirements)
As for uploading, you should leave your client running until the file has reached a ratio of 1:1.. after that you can just stop the transfer and remove the file from your client.
