NAT problem - read every FAQ on the Net and no solution

Postby mabes on Wed Jan 19, 2005 11:57 pm

If I cannot get this problem solved I will either go insane or smash my computer and/or router. I cannot get incoming connections with bittorrent.

I've gone through the whole thing of configuring the router, for ports 6881-6889 and others, I've tried about 20 ports. I've disabled Windows firewall, I've given Azureus access in Zone Alarm, I even tried turning Zone Alarm off entirely. Still I get NAT errors. I don't mean the yellow face, I understand that can happen with any torrent depending on a lot of factors. But if I use the configuration utility in Azureus (and other tests) I always get an NAT error, no matter what port I try. I know I've set the router correctly, I forward ports to my IP address as gotten from cmd and ipconfig. I've tried G3, I've tried using a telnet client (I had no idea what that was 2 days ago) to bypass some default setting with the Netgear router that blocked access, this was for a webserver and other things so I don't even know if it affects bittorrent but it was worth a try.
I've set up a static address with all the above and forwared ports to that. Nothing works. Could it be a setting in AVG Anti-virus, or Spyware Blocker? I don't see how it could be, there are no settings for allowing programs.

I have XP and am using Time Warner Road Runner, is there a certain port range I should use? I have Vonage, that couldn't possibly affect it?

AVG is strictly an investigator/cleaner so it isn't it. Spyware cleaners like Ad-Aware or Spybot don't intrude either..BUT.. blockers block! You might check into that. :snow

try a port range a bit higher up... like 50000 sort of area, it could be your ISP blocking it (look at the name of your ISP if you doubt they would be blocking common p2p ports :-P)

It's the Vonage! I just went through this today. For some reason the Vonage adaptor was responsible for the NAT errors. When I ran the cable modem straight to the computer Azureus was happy. When I ran the cable modem to the router Azureus was happy. When I ran the cable modem to the Vonage adaptor to the router (as it had been before) Azureus got unhappy and got NAT errors. I now have the Vonage adaptor plugged into the router w/ the appropriate ports forwarded.
