MXPIE Team - Why so many updates!

Postby Gemini777 on Sat Jun 24, 2006 8:33 am

A lot of people have asked why so many PIE updates lately. Here's the quick overview of what happened.

Patch 2.9 ceased to work effectively due to the fact that two of the caches ran by WinMXGroup changed IP addresses. Another cache went offline at the same time and the operator could not be contacted. Due to this the only working cache left began to struggle under the increased load and was going off line intermittently.

At that point it was recommended that users to switch to 2.6 for the time being as it contained an IP address of a working cache that could help get users connected to the network once again. This gave us time to work on a new patch which was released as 2.12.

Patch 2.12 contained the IP addresses of all known working caches. Not long after release, KM, the person responsible for the WinMX group caches, began running a server on some of the IP addresses listed in the Patch 2.12 and previous PIE patches that would cause PIE Patch users to see only a falsified update message and help room if they happened to connect to one of those servers. This was an intentional scam to trick PIE Patch users into running his dll method because they felt they had no other choice.

Patch 3.1 removed WinMXGroup caches due to the irresponsible actions of KM and also due to his threats against our help rooms and our websites if we continued to include his servers in our patch.

Patch 3.2 removed one IP that was due to come online at the time of 3.1, however the operator of this cache decided not to put it back online at the IP address listed in the patch. Therefore there is no longer a working cache at that address, so it has been removed and the load balanced over the other three functioning servers.

The three servers are now working very efficiently thanks to Sabre's quick reactions and constant attention.

As far as the PIE Team goes, the PIE installer updates were done by Unique and thanks to him and our beta testers were we able to provide a throughly tested installer even under the pressure. In addition our PR crew have been working hard in the help room assisting people in getting connected with the new patch, and our marketing expert, Kayleigh, has been working night and day getting the word out about the new patch. Jim has been busy making me pie (hehe just kidding, thanks Jim).

If anyone would like to help out we always need people who are willing to assist in the help room with PIE Patch and other WinMX issues.
