music wont play

I have a couple of songs downloaded and they wont play on windows media player why?!

There could be a number of reasons for your problem.

Firstly, WMP is shit, get a better player, like Winamp. The song you downloaded might be in a format that WMP can't play, the song might be a fake file that just contains silence. It may also be another type of file in reality, having had it's extension renamed. Hell, you may not even have the file type associated with WMP and you're clicking it and nothing happens. I don't know, you don't give any details. What happens EXACTLY. What type are you trying to play, do you get any error messages.... what?

Yet another possibility is that it's a copy-protected WMA file that you downloaded from some moron.

I'm having the same problem. Can't seem to listen to the album. I have tried different players including winamp. How can I verify if it's a silent album?

I wouldnt wipe my ass with winamp..I had nothin but system jam ups and constant problems with it.(the newer versions)!

So what Marty, that's just you. Thousands of people use WinAMP without a hitch.

And it very likely may be bad soundcard drivers that crippled WinAMP on your system, not WinAMP itself.

On the other hand... I do prefer Foobar2000 v0.83 over WinAMP for playing audio. I only use WinAMP for some light tagging, and watching videos, these days.

Try using this program;

It opens everything and if it can't open it, it will tell you why and suggest a fix for it.
For instance, I've downloaded an mp3 file and tried to open it in all my media players and in most cases the program I'm using, let's say Windows media player, will give me a message "The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior." and then ask if you would like to play it anyways.
If I play it I’ll get another message saying that the player can't play it and suggests that the file is corrupted, but if I play it using the above mentioned program it plays!
For me I just use recording software to record it and save it as an mp3 file.

I use realplayer free version.
Sometimes I download a song that will not play and a message comes up that says "file is damaged or corrupt"
I have learned to open this file in musicmatch jukebox ( came with the computer but I dont like to use it to play music ) and convert the "corrupt" mp3 into an mp3 and then the song plays with no problem. ( done this about 5 times so far and it worked every time ) Not sure how or why this works but it does. Music match jukebox can convert files to other formats = mp3, wav & mp3pro.

I am having this problem also; I use WINMX to download (I've been on the WINMX Forum trying to find a solution and someone suggested I post it here).
I have Windows Media Player 9; I realize that WINMX was down for a while, but ever since I've got it back running, I can't get any of the files to be recognized in Media Player, Jukebox, anything... I watch it download the info (see that there are numbers and percents) while it downloads, but then Windows Media player sees it as 0.0 and says it's not found, not supported... I have even gotten the win zip on line to try to attack it that way. I have never had it do this before....
HELP!

So, it sounds to me (by the way I intemperate your post) like you are only having trouble playing media files that you have acquired using the WinMX software/network?

If that is the case, I feel that altho you say the files downloaded ok(contained data), they could be "fake" files.

What type of file(s) are they exactly (.mp3 .Wma .mpg .avi ?) ...do you have files of the same type that were NOT acquired via WinMX and do they play ok in your media player(s)?

What I am trying to establish here is :

(1) is this a fake or corrupt file issue..

(2) is this a codec issue.

(3) the wrong file extension has been assigned to the file(s) by the person(s) that supplied them.

PS: WMA files are not considered a safe format to trade in. ..for privacy reasons!

Hi, Gibz. Thanks for the post. The song says it is MP3. It is Rob Thomas' new "This is How a Heart Breaks." I watch it download. When I try to play the file in WMP, it gives me the error that it "is unable to initialize the file" and when I click on more information, I get the following: 0xC00D001F: Cannot find the file" ... Web Info help says that Media player realizes this is a bug and is currently investigating the error.

I know enough about this to know that it is in "My Music" folder, and I can see it when I open the folder and look for it. Properties say "0.0" however, passing over it with my mouse it says it is 3.53 something or other and is an MP3 song. There are other MP3's in my library. This is the only song I have tried to download since reinstalling the patch for WINMX. I have several versions of it. I even did the "-C" in the second line of search in WINMX to get a real file ...
Any help would be much appreciated! I come to my posts several times a day to see if anyone has a solution!

I mainly download videos/ movies on WinMX and the open naps.

All my problems opening movie files, even when the files have some damaged sections, disappeared when I started using VLC player , now set as my default media for movies/vodeos.

I don't even need to use the old AviPreview player to check out partially downloaded files, as I can open a movie after I have about one percent of it, to see if it is a real file or a good quality,just by using the free VLC media player.

And apparently there are versions for Mac, Linux, many diff. OSs.

You mght want to try it for those difficult files, maybe even MP3s

( I generally use Winamp v 5.03A for MP3s.)
