If I ever figure out how to write a firefox extension, the first one will be an extesion lister. It'll spit out a nice html file with links to the homepages for each extension you have installed.

I'll start work on that right after I toilet train this cat.

Took about 6 weeks with Taki, so I will expect to see the extension 2 months from now.

I'm goin' a little bonzo with the extensions myself. Here's one I really like

http://easygestures.mozdev.org/

Set it to run while dragging only & it works really well.

Ok i have a question, i have had a love/hate relationship with Firefox, mostly hate, the biggest annoyance i have, is:

When someone posts a link in a chat channel or yahoo/msn etc, i click the link, IE opens and goes directly to the link, in FF clicking the link only opens FF, to goto the link you must click the link again after FF has opened!

You may think this is silly, but its these sorts of annoyances that drove me back to IE, anyone know an addon to cure this?

Other annoyances include, the amount of sites that dont show correctly in FF including my own, why is FF slower at showing/refreshing pages, how do i set my "favorites" to show down the left side rather than the top, flash doesnt show, it does in IE, this list goes on and on........

On top of this, the list of damn addons is so damn big, isnt there a simple pack with all the standard features IE has? Right now FF looks pretty unappealing, if it wasnt for handy seo features, i wouldnt bother with it at all.

Someone convince me its worth its wieght over IE............

Not the way it works for me, something must be set f**k, but then again, we did say you installed it didnt we? :P

That has more to do with non compliant pages, than firefox. However, your page comes up with no significant variation for me on either browser.

Also, FF is not slower for me, and if anything seems a bit faster, yet I have done no real testing that could be considered real data.

View - Sidebar, Bookmarks. ? But then again I use ook to put my favorites available on a right click context menu.

flash doesnt show

Download the plugin (once) and its resolved.

Come on Nobby ( and no thats not an offer for others :P ) I dont use addons to give me the ability to be equal to IE, I use them to be FAR superior to IE.

The list of extensions I use located at http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic ... 4605#24605 by no means makes it equal to IE, it just further buries IE in the dust.

Hey Nobby,

We're going to win you over yet. Found this Tab Sidebar extension. It says the new version shows the pic instead of just text on the tab, but it's likely tweakable.

Speed tweak for FF http://www.totalidea.com/freestuff4.htm
It comes with an installer, but only uses tested tweaks. Has a profile backup and restore option. Used it myself and cut page load time in half on the test.

Good info here, eg. using IE rendering engine to open certain sites in FF

Some effort to dial it in for sure, but once it is it's the champ hands down.

KM wrote:i just wonder how long it takes for firefox to load with all that crap installed...

I have about 50 extensions in the firefox on my P1...and it does take awhile to open it, which is why you don't close it once you get it open.

KM wrote:and it must take f**k ages to reinstall after a format... all those extensions to install...

indeed it does...which is why i haven't installed it on the new computer. (The program folder/profile from the old pc isn't compatable with the new OS.)

But for most people the best thing to do is make a backup of your mozilla profile after installing all your extensions, and run Bookmark Backup to take care of the crap that changes....and don't install programs on your C drive! And set Bookmark Backup to save the files to another drive.

Then restoring is a snap. The old firefox folder should still be on D or wherever...and you copy back your profile to C...and you copy back the stuff from Bookmark Backup. No reinstalling of any of it.

If you did everything right, it should be perfect with nothing lost.

Some more extensions that I use that I don't think were mentioned yet:

Bookmark All - Bookmark all opened tabs quickly
Bookmark Duplicate Detector - Detects duplicates when fav is added
Configuration Mania - More advanced configuration
CookieCuller - Manage your cookies
Copy Plain Text - Copies text without formatting
Disable Targets for Download - Dont let download links open a blank tab
Download Manager Tweak - Makes the Download Manager useful
Download With - Download files with external programs
Drag & Drop Upload - This extension helps you to upload files
Favicon Picker - adds UI for replacing favicons in the bookmark manager
Favorites Converter (export) - Convert your bookmarks to IE favorites
Flashblock - Display a button instead of flash object
Gmail Notifier - Check if you have new Gmail
Image Zoomer - Right click menu to zoom image
ImgTag - Generates IMG tags and copies them
Jump Link - Allows you to skip through redirect link
Plain Text Links - Treat selected plain text urls as links
Popup Alt Attribute - Show alternate text for pics in tooltips
Popup Count - Counts the number of blocked popups
Popup Sound - Plays a sound when a popup window is blocked
Resizable Text Area - Resize textareas to your needs
Search Button - Adds a Search button to the toolbar
Show Image - Adds 'Show Image' entry to context menu
Tab Clicking Options - Control clicks on tabs
Toolbar Enhancements - Adds many useful extra toolbar buttons
View Source With - View page source with external editor
Webmail Compose - Compose web e-mails easily.
xMirror - Adds dropdownlist in your EM that lets you to select 5 other sites

As you can see, I have a favorite extensions site:
http://www.extensionsmirror.nl

439 Firefox Extensions
77 Thunderbird Extensions

I have really cut my collection down a lot in my main copy of Firefox (I also maintain a web dev portable version, separately)

  • Ad Muncher Browser Extensions 1.0
  • Add Bookmark Here ² 3.1.20081205
  • All-in-One Sidebar 0.7.6 (older version behaves better for me)
  • Bookmark Backup 0.4.10 (does more than just bookmarks, and can back them up outside your profile, to another drive)
  • Canaware NetNotes 2.0 (Not as good as Surfulater, but keeps js intact and exporting for sharing is easier)
  • ColorfulTabs 3.9.1
  • Download Statusbar 0.9.6.4
  • Fire.fm 1.2.3
  • Google Toolbar for Firefox 5.0.20090122Wb2
  • GoogleEnhancer 1.70
  • Greasemonkey 0.8.20090123.1
  • InfoLister 0.10 (what I used to make this list)
  • NoScript 1.9.1.91
  • PDF Download 2.1.0.2 (save any page as a PDF, with live links intact)
  • Song.ly 1.1
  • Surfulater Integration 3.0.8 (can't live without this!)
  • Tab Kit 0.4.3
  • TinEye Image Search 0.6 (reverse image search engine)
  • Toolbar Buttons 0.6.0.5
  • Veoh Video Compass 1.4.4 [disabled] (I am not crazy about the "enhancements" to Wikipedia & Google)
  • Veoh Web Player Video Finder 1.4
  • WOT 20090325
