Little help please - can't open files

I've downloaded some programs and I don't know how to open them. I tried clicking on them, but a window comes up asking how I'm going to run the program. I'd be grateful to anyone who can make some suggestions. Thank you very much. I also have aim if anyone wants to chat. Just let me know.
