A church minister who groomed young boys on the interenet and subjected them to appalling sex attacks has been jailed for life.

Simon Thomas was told by a judge at Southampton Crown Court he would serve at least eight years in jail.

The 44-year-old, who is married man with four children, was also banned from communicating and working with children.

As a further measure, he will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

Thomas, who served as a minister with the United Reformed Church in Hythe, Hants, pleaded guilty last month to 35 charges.

They included two offences of raping an 11-year-old boy.

Other offences included taking indecent photos of children and indecent assault involving nine boys aged 11 to 15.

It emerged earlier this week Thomas committed most of the offences after warnings to the police and the URC about his sexual liaisons with minors.

Thomas was questioned in 2003 but officers halted the investigation without checking his computers because the tip-off was anonymous.

The father of one of his victims - who wished to remain anonymous - told Sky News the case had devastated his family.

A 65-year-old man has been jailed for 20 years for a 30-year campaign of rape and sexual abuse against young children described as the worst ever to come before the courts.

Robert Smith, of Cross Street, Scarborough, was jailed at York Crown Court after pleading guilty to 42 sex offences, including rape and buggery against 21 children between 1954 and 1984.

Sentencing Smith, the Recorder of York, Judge Paul Hoffman, said: "If the sentence that is passed results in you dying in prison that's

no more than you deserve."

The judge told the court that in the law book Thomas's Sentencing Encyclopaedia there was no case "that's as bad as this one".

The judge said the case was made even more serious by the "sheer scale of wickedness" and Smith's "callous regard" for his victims' feelings.

Smith had showed a "prolonged and insatiable depravity" and admitted many more sex offences against children to probation officers.

The judge said: "Yours is the worst case of its type that I've ever encountered in nearly 42 years of criminal practice.

"It stands apart in its sheer scale of wickedness and your callous disregard for the victims' feelings.

"For 30 years you abused the trust placed in you by parents and children alike to use as sexual playthings (the children you abused). You dominated these children by your presence and behaviour. They were terrified of you and you abused them through fear."

The court heard that the 42 offences to which Smith pleaded guilty were against 21 children and the effects on them had been severe, leading to nervous personalities, stammering and stuttering. Many were still traumatised, the judge said.

Just to add a child is a pure thing and incapable of protecting or defending itself in cases even so far as to say they dont know right from wrong , Philes should not be sent to jail because in the uk it is far too easy to do "jail" They should have an Arena similar to mad max where people like me can set to them with blowtorches and pliers ect !

nothing ....that's what jail is......The real problem lies with us...yes E. You and me and nobby and LG and Sable and every other free person. We noticed the vehicle acting strange yesterday. Sitting out in the road by our house.
