Just found new type of audio - SHN and FLAC what to use?

Postby Çurrent AKA 463 on Wed Aug 11, 2004 9:13 pm

I just found new kinds of audio compression shn and flac.
I downloaded concerts of my favorite band in these formats.
So I have to learn how to use it :P

If anyone else has had experience with decompressing SHN(and the ass. files) and flac files please post what programs you use to uncompress them.

SHN is Shorten (extension .shn) is an audio compression scheme written by Tony Robinson of SoftSound http://research.umbc.edu/~hamilton/shnfaq.html#tools

I have no idea what program to use on this.

FLAC is http://flac.sourceforge.net/faq.html
i plan to use flac110m.exe

 okay I tried MKW mkwACT097b1.exe (install program) for winXP and it worked GREAT to convert my shn (etc) files to WAV's

I did NOT have to set it to "win 95" or "win98" compatabilitymode like one README tells.

So I'm enjoying some, of the many files at LIVE MUSIC ARCHIVE http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisti ... 812dc92a40

specifically 74 concerts of the Cowboy Junkies http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisti ... %20Junkies

also http://www.etree.org/shnamp.html for shn files

http://flac.sourceforge.net/ for FLAC

might also want to try http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

I've gotten a plug in for winamp to play both formats without having to convert them - google search should yeild results ;)

also try http://sharingthegroove.org/ audiophile heaven with info on both formats

I use FlacDrop for compressing and decompressing FLAC files. Just like OggDrop, simply drag and drop the file onto the FlacDrop box, and it will begin compressing/decompressing. Dead easy, and available HERE.
Now I am become death. The destroyer of Worlds.
