joining avi files

hello i am also using vdub 1.5.10
i have tried to link two files together and it tells me that there has been a vdub error and cannot append the segment,the video streams have different data formats. how can i change this so they both have the same?

you need to re-encode (also possible with v-dub) into like formats. If the data is in different formats that's like trying to glue a CD to a 45 Record, won't work. (Unless you're doing it for art) http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_docs

ok re-encode! how do i do that? i have been to the v.dub forums and have read all the posts on appending avi files a lot of people have got the same prob. there is some good info but nothing that is actually telling me how to get round this! i wont stop until i have got the 2 files 2gether wot have i started! thanks for any replies

The two parts must be the same audio and video bitrates - if they are not you will need to reencode each avi (i assume they are both avi's) separately and set the same bitrate, then join them. Don't forget that every time you encode something you lose a bit of quality, even if you're the biggest expert, so think about whether it's really worth it.
