PC Illiterate - Still having problems.Please Help!

Ok, so I did everything as Canada Joe said with the install instructions but My connection status just keeps flashing YELLOW and my Connection type is for some reason listed as Secondary and when I try to change it over to primary (I have roadrunner/brighthouse Cable) the following message comes up:

You cannot make a primary connection to the WinMX peer network for the following reasons:

-Outgoing TCP connections use proxy server
-No TCP port for incoming connections
-No UDP port for incoming and outgoing packets


Everything on my system HAS worked in the past... I've changed nothing on it. Like I said in my first post, This all sort of started when I signed up for Itunes just to buy a friends recording off of them to help him out.
Would it help if I completely deleted itunes/itunes music store?

Hey Winonasalibi, what is the sentence u see on the left of yr Ignored button at the top of yr winmx (the Ignored button is the one with the red circle on it?) <<< pls answer this ... it is the 1st step to the troubleshooting process.

U can go to primary connection just by doing this :

1. Hit the Settings (button at top of WinMX)
2. Select »» Internet Connection »» Outgoing TCP Connections
3. Click »» Don't use a proxy server
4. Select »» Incoming TCP Connections »» Choose the top option
5. Listen on port 6699 for incoming Connections (type in 6699)
6. In/Out UDP Packets Choose the top option
7. Send and receive UDP datagrams on port 6257 (type in 6257)
8. Click Close.
9, Restart your WinMX on Primary Connection.

There doesn't seem to be any sentence to the left of it.
On my screen the buttons (Icons) read as follows:
Ignored / Settings / Help on the top line.
Then Networks / Shared Files / Chat / Search / Hotlist / Transfers / Bandwidth
on the line below that.
To the LEFT of the Ignored button/icon there is nothing but blank white space.
On the Blue heading line above that it reads
WinMX v 3.53 <Connecting> when the Yellow "Finding network connections" light is flashing in the Connection Status area. When it is red or disconnected there is only the WinMX v3.53 in the Blue Heading.

I think the first listed I typed was when I tried using the Zip file Version.
Now, when I try to change the Connection typed from Secondary to Primary (Cable) the pop up reads as follows:
-Outgoing TCP connection use proxy server.

Is there a different number or code that I have to insert to get it to work right?
or..... ?

I swear if I ever get this thing working again I'm going to get rid of Itunes and NEVER use them again.!

If u did it right... the blank space next to yr Ignored button won't be blank anymore. Pls redo it again, just in case u missed any step.

Please remember to disable all firewalls, antivirus programs and antispyware programs before installation of Pie Auto Updater and to enable all of them after installation of Pie Auto Updater as according to instructions here : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php

Installation of the Pie Auto Updating patch, please note if you are running any antivirus or other protective software that prevents changes to your hosts file, you may need to switch it off to install this software, please don't forget to restart your protective software after installation.

When u have done the above and it still does not work the 2nd time ... the entries in yr host file could be deleted (by ur previous use of wmw patch). So the solution to that is simple just follow the instructions on this page : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php

To manually install the Pie auto updating patch:



1. Click on: PIE Manual Install

2. Download the file and unzip it directly into: Local Disk C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc folder (if using xp) Or C:\WINDOWS (if not using xp) this will replace yr Host file.

3. Click here Download Pie Auto Updater Installer and either save the file to your desktop, or select run to install right away.

4. Follow the Pie Auto Updater installation instructions on your screen.

5. Click Winmx download and install a fresh copy of Winmx 3.53 or 3.54.

6. Run through the normal winmx setup process

7. Right click on: Pie Auto Updater icon (in your system tray bottom right of screen) then click on 'Manual Update Now'

8. Restart Winmx and you're done.

Ok... I wasn't able to delete the PieAutoUpdater but I think it's because it was open and running.... now I've exited it and it looks like its gone... now let me try what you suggested.

Ok... I went through the steps and it keeps asking me questions I don't know about... about what types of TCP connections and if I use proxy servers and such which I don't know about so I just had to click what seemed to be the right answer based on what little I know about my system ( I'm using Windows XP if that makes any difference)

Good, it takes a while for 2ndaries to connect to winmx cos 2ndaries need to connect to other primaries 1st to connect to winmx. I have seen ppl take up to 15-20 mins to connect on 2ndary connection.

Very few ppl need to use a proxy and it is a pain to use, for 1) u can't download or upload on it, very horrid speeds. Would not advise u to use proxy at all.

The reason is a few months back the wmw patch u were using upped and left winmx and u r left with a now defunct wmw patch that leaves u unconnected.

That is why I just switched u over to Vladd's patch Pie Auto Updater.

Need to ask u 2 questions :

Did u reinstall an entirely new winmx from Vladd44 site? (This is really impt cos if u didn't, the wmw patch from the winmx u used b4 will stop any connection with any new patch like the Pie Auto Updater.)

Do a test for me... go to this site : http://www.winmx.com

and tell me what u see there.

Ideally if u did what I told u right ... u shd see 1 sentence on a blue background there, paste it here.

U can connect to primary with the method I gave above... if u can't connect... the underlying issue could be ur isp r blocking those ports... TCP=6699 and UDP=6257 ARE the default ports of winmx, everyone shd be able to connect on them except if their isp is blocking those ports. The solution to that after waiting say 20mins to connect on primary is check yr firewalls and then yr router to switch to other ports to connect to (ones that yr isp does not block winmx on).

I will give it a shot with the info you've provided. If I'm still not able to get it running (15mins?) than I will attempt to contact you via the room listing given. I work quite a bit so it's hard to know when I am able to arrange a time to 'be there' as it were.

OK....."Success." I've got the Green Ready light to finally come up... in the connection status area....

...but, I've been waiting for about 20 minutes and Nothings coming up... no songs.
I thought for a minute it was just me looking for obscure music no one else liked, but then I typed in "Elvis" "Madonna" and "Beatles" (3 names that always instantly start a flood of songs streaming down) and Nothing.

Is there anything else that may be blocking it or what should I do now?

np, u r simply getting fake files in yr searches.

Do this :

To avoid fakes in yr searches, simply search like this :

-c: artistename songname
-user

Simply input the 1st line *-c: artistename songname* into the top line of Search and input *-user* into the 2nd line of Search and click Audio and click Search.

An eg of searching a song called My Immortal by the artiste Evanescence would be searched this way :

-c: Evanescence My Immortal
-user

<<< when u search that way all yr searches will download.

the - minuses the fake results in the c drives and user folders that RIAA love to flood fakes in so that is why the above format works.

If u r looking for a movie, search this way :

-c: moviename
-user

(don't forget to select video b4 clicking on Search)

Eg: if searching for Transformers, search like this :

-c: Transformers
-user

If u get a channel list on 2ndary... u shd be able to search, download and upload.

I am on primary & The top line reads as follows:

WinMX v 3.54 beta 4 <Online P=5 S=O spm=7155>

the spm keeps changing though... now it reads 5703....now 6755..... now 6182...etc

Pls set TCP=unabled and UDP=unabled and restart yr winmx on 2ndary.

Do this :

1. Hit the Settings (button at top of WinMX)
2. Select »» Internet Connection »» Outgoing TCP Connections
3. Click »» Don't use a proxy server
4. Select »» Incoming TCP Connections »» Choose the bottom option
(which is Unable to accept Incoming TCP connections)
5. Select In/Out UDP Packets »» Choose the bottom option
(which is Unable to send or receive UDP datagrams on any port)
6. Click Close.
7. Exit WinMX program totally.
8. Restart WinMX on 2ndary connection.

May take a while for a 2ndary connection to connect, stay with it. When u r connected, see if u get any room list when u click Refresh Channels.

If u can get a room list, u can try testing yr transfers (ie both ur downloads and uploads). Remember to search for files with the above method I stated.

This is how u search (with no asterisks) :

-c: Evanescence My Immortal
-user

If u don't get any room list... disconnect yr winmx and wait 8mins and reconnect winmx again. Check again for room list and lemme know how it goes.

At this point, I would suggest u get into Vladd44 Help Room here : http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6514 and park there until u see me so I can test yr transfers.
