how long!??!!!!

nero visionexpress 2 takes about 8 hours to sort out the menus etc on my dvd before writing.

apparently this is normal, but it seems ridiculous to me.

can the process be made quicker?

specifically i'm writing a dvd with 2 700mb files, each split into 8 chapters, totalling 3 menus, each with their own background and headers etc. but with no music added.

if there's really nothing i can do about it, then does anyone know how quickly software improvements will lessen the time it takes? i only sleep for about 5 hours per night and it seems really stupid to take longer than that to write a dvd.

i'm probably being overexpectant because i don't understand the technical details, but i want to it quicker, simple as that!!

You want a lot, especially since you don't say what your 2 mb "files" are... I'll take a wild guess and say they are 2 avis which your nero is encoding to dvd format, then authoring. (I never use nero for this so i can't tell you for sure how long it will take), it does seem a long time, but I have no idea what your cpu is, for one.
If you want it quicker, "simple as that," I have the simplest solution - buy the dvd.

you're absolutely right, 2 avi's. unfortunately i can't just buy the dvd, because it's not commercially available.

so - 2 avi files, 780mb & 800mb, each split into 8 chapters but at irregular intervals. menus as stated previously.

athlon 1000mhz
512ram
nec2500a
defragged hd
network connection disabled
no other programs running

i wouldn't be surprised if nero wasn't the best program to do this with, so what good software is there that will fit my needs?

Nero may not be the best, but to be honest, you aint gonna find any progs that i know of that will shave more than a few minutes off the encoding time. Its all due to the fact that you have to encode the avi file into dvd format. Try downloading the file in dvd format next time, or sleep longer ;)

Or another solution, buy a divx player, i.e. an avi-compatible stand-alone dvd player (I hear Philips is going for $69.99 at Walmart if you're in the U.S., but I also hear they're out of stock). That way you won't need to encode anything, just burn your avi's as data onto cd or dvd and watch them on your dvd player.
