Got a Sony Handy cam, old one 8 mm tape. Can connect up to PC thru TVCard and save movies as MPEG1, MPEG2, MS-MPEG4 352 X 288, VCD 352 X 288, SVCD480 X 576, DVD 720 X 576, AVI or OTHER 352 X 288.

I saved a video and now have a 5 min 17 sec AVI, 1411 kbps, 720 X 576, and it is 6.17 GB in size.

Which format is best? All I really wanted to do was back the tapes up and save them onto a dvd, just to play on PC in WMP or similar. Does not need to play on DVD player.

The AVI you made is probably completely uncompressed, and I think 6.17 GB for a 5 minute video is a bit over the top. For good quality and size that's acceptable I would go for the DVD format.
