Does anyone know anything about installing winmx??? When I try to manually update the pie patch its telling me

manual update on pie-patch error: Error while updating HOSTS file. Please make sure that an Internet connection is available and that the file is not marked read-only, Path/File access error

Does anyone know what this means?

And when I try to load winmx - I have followed the installation instructions, it cant find an Internet connection, nor can I connect to the on line help on winmx, but net is working fine

Does anyone have any suggestions?

leppi what is the sentence u see on the left of yr Ignored button at the top of yr winmx (the Ignored button is the one with the red circle on it?)

>>> there r 3 scenarios when u get this error all of them have to do with the host file not being able to update with pie auto updater patch.

I will start with the simplest.

Scenario 1 : Right click on the host file, click on Properties and uncheck the Read-Only box at Attributes.
(For xp users the host file is located here : C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc folder
For non-xp users the host file is located here : C:\WINDOWS )

U shd be fine after that. If Scenario 1's solution does not work go to Scenario 2.

Scenario 2 :

Installation of the Pie Auto Updating patch, please note if you are running any antivirus or other protective software that prevents changes to your hosts file, you may need to switch it off to install this software, please don't forget to restart your protective software after installation.

Simply disable yr firewall, antivirus program and antispyware program b4 installation of the Pie Auto Updater patch. After installation of Pie Auto Updater patch ... pls remember to enable yr firewall, antivirus and antispyware programs back.

U shd be fine after that. If Scenario 2's solution does not work go to Scenario 3.

Scenario 3 : Assuming u have done these instructions already :

1. Close WinMX totally
2. Uninstall WinMX :
Click Start »» Settings »» Control Panel
Double click on Add or Remove Programs »» Remove WinMX
3. Search for WinMX.exe and Delete all found
4. Delete the WinMX directory:
Usually it's in: C:\Program Files\WinMx
5. Empty Recycle Bin
6. Install PieAutoUpdater »» from here:

7. Right click on Pie Auto Updater icon on yr systray at the bottom right of your screen next to the time/date display and click Manual Update Now.
You will see the pglite icon disappear and re-appear shortly to indicate update is done.
8. Reinstall a fresh WinMX 3.53 »» from here:

Please follow each steps closely and do not skip anyone of them or you may have to re-do it all over again.

And u still get the error called : manual update on pie-patch error: Error while updating HOSTS file. Please make sure that an Internet connection is available and that the file is not marked read-only, Path/File access error

Then u need to do a manual updating of the Pie Auto Updater patch.... to do that simply go to this page : http://www.vladd44.com/mx/piepatch.php

and the last part of it where it says :

To manually install the Pie auto updating patch:

1. Click on: PIE Manual Install

2. Download the file and unzip it directly into: Local Disk C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc folder (if using xp) Or C:\WINDOWS (if not using xp) this will replace yr Host file.

3. Click here Download Pie Auto Updater Installer and either save the file to your desktop, or select run to install right away.

4. Follow the Pie Auto Updater installation instructions on your screen.

5. Click Winmx download and install a fresh copy of Winmx 3.53 or 3.54.

6. Run through the normal winmx setup process

7. Right click on: Pie Auto Updater icon (in your system tray bottom right of screen) then click on 'Manual Update Now'

8. Restart Winmx and you're done.

Then u shd be alright after that.
