Help in Launching Pie Patch

Postby FYREDAWG on Thu May 29, 2008 7:07 pm

Hello, I've followed the steps in "Magic Formula" to the letter and still can't get hooked up. OS = Winxp pro (firewall disabled), Pie Patch 3.2, WinMx 3.53

When I righr click on on pie patch to manual update it gives me the following "Error with updating HOSTS FILE. Please make sure that an internet connection is available and this file is not marke read-only."

I'm on the internet and the pie patch file is not checked as a read only. Of course when I try to launch WinMx it never connects.

What am I overlooking?

Thanks!

Hi Fyredawg

This issue you describe is usually caused by a firewall or antivirus blocking the patches access to the internet. Try disabling your firewall/antivirus during the installation and update, then re-enable afterwards. Some firewalls/antivirus apps dont like mods to the hosts file.

Post back, let us know how you do.

Hey thanks for the reply! After "playing" around with various things I finally got it working. I located the HOSTS file and saw that it was checked as a "read only", uchecked it and voila! Worked as advertised. Not completely satisfied with the number of valid search returns but at least I got it up and running.

Thanks again!
