help! I can't play avi files

I am a mac user (os 10.3. and I can't play avi files using quicktime, window's media player, or real player. I try and I keep gettting the same message "the required compressor can't be found." I can play any toher type fo flie (mpg, wmv, ect) but not avi's.

If someone could help me out I would love you for ever.
