Getting my file to play

Postby gutty on Thu Dec 02, 2004 9:45 pm

I downloaded a TV show and want to play it. When I open it in Windows Media, it plays the first few seconds of video and then freezes. The audio works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Your video codec is out of date. try updating the divx and xvid codecs

Ok, then just don't install all the codec's in the Nimo pack. I did that. Took a while
to figure it out. I think it was on a warning on his site about installing all the codecs
at once. Might have been from here though.

you should never just randomly install several codecs, especially if you have no idea what they are!!! there are a couple of "bundle" codec packs that you can play that will allow you to watch most files that you dl. here are a couple: http://www.free-codecs.com/index.htm
http://www.rita.lt

look for the sld codec pack. Also, I highly recommend the vlc player, it has it's own set of codecs and can play most any file, ie, rar, tar, bin/cue, etc. it is nice!!

before you install codecs, you MUST uninstall "old" versions of the codecs or you will have issues and will fail to solve your problem.

I still stand by my suggestion to only download divx and xvid for video codecs.

Please don't ever install a ton of codecs that you don't need, you might end up from a situation in which you can't watch a movie to a situation where you need to reformat. Vladd gave the best suggestion, to use GSpot, and here is my list of basic codecs which you will just about always need. After that you should use GSpot to determine what else you need if you ever run across another which doesn't play or doesn't have sound:
