Frontcode gone?

Postby HookedOnFonix on Tue Sep 20, 2005 11:41 pm

Hi all,

It's HookedOnFonix, local village idiot moderator from the former SmittysTavern.

Within the last several hours, neither myself nor Smitty have been able to connect to the WPN. It seems that www.winmx.com has dropped off the radar. ...it also seems that www.frontcode.com has been taken down as well.

In light of the recent events brought to pass by the RIAA, I'm hoping that someone here can shed some light on the current situation.

Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

~HOF

Yep, I think this is the day... I have been trying for a while to figure out what was wrong, and then tried KM's forum (Which is also gone lol) and decided to try here.... I suppose this is where we become 'Criminals' and believe me if this is more than a technical difficulty, it will be on the news, and we will be portrayed as such.

...until this is sorted out, it might be time to head on over to www.gotnap.com and get those addresses in your opennap client(s). :|

They have both been taken down and sadly all we have left is decentralized chat ..

See this news post for more info: http://www.gameshout.com/news/092005/article1223.htm

leaving us looking at alternatives ..
Cutlass .. WASTE .. Kdrive to name a few seem to be good solutions.

Dare I say it .. MIRC

That would be because the rooms are already in its cache, if its been connected for a few hours it still remains connected, cause im still connected to the WPN but as soon as i restart winmx it will be impossible for me to connect

Hey Hookenonfonix i think the simple fact of the matter is, the cartel have threatened frontcode with a cease and desist style order and they have replied by shutting down.............

Seems thats simple

I'm aware some users have been planning for such an event, however im not too sure how advanced the plans are, im sure we will find out soon enough.

Not good at all folks...looks like the www.winmx.com site has disappeared from my DNS and maybe other name servers near or far. Type the following in a command prompt to see what I mean:

nslookup www.winmx.com

if you see "can't find www.winmx.com: Non-existent domain" then your name server doesn't recognize winmx.com

frontcode.com is still recognized by my DNS but for how long I'm not sure.

Good Day to all it seems what I have thus far read confirms as to the problems I've had for the past 6hrs which No Winmx and both web sites are dead.

Solutions are required for all and I can eliminate one P2P as I have tried DC++ with transposed files from Winmx and can Not continue the test files >No Worky<

Question is I have tried only one (two months ago) and today will try the same test on Emule and see what happens >> Good Luck All<< Will return in some hours<< :(

right before the time that they first started beta testing for winmx 35x, i did a whois on winmx.com and at that time the domain was owned by frontcode and they were located in canada

i just did a whois on winmx.com and the new address it is registered to is in Port Vila, Vanuatu...a small island in the south pacific ... it is no longer registered to Frontcode...the new name it is registered to is WinMX Technologies

i think there 2 things at work here with frontcode:

1. they are moving their operations to the south pacific in order to protect their legal asses

2. they might be getting ready to launch a new winmx that will replace the current one...entire new protocol, which they have said they planned on doing with the next beta

don't panic yet, just hang on to your seats for now and see if we can ride this out

Vanuatu?!?

It would be hilarious if that was the new location of the servers, considering it was a location for the show "Survivor".

What a great bit of coincidence that would be.

flooding seems 2 be the imediate problem. The primaries r pounded with fake files from the RIAA & cant handle the burden & fall over. I believe that was also illegal. So where we go from here, I dont know.

CoalDust wrote:Could those that know how please set up open nap servers, and it would be nice for someone to post how this can be done, thanks in advance, lets show "Our Friend" Cary that we are fighting back

I don't know much, but the slavanap ap seems to be usable. It has loads of bells and whistles and the help doesn't even explain them all.

there are already hundreds of opennap servers out there but the nets are so disorganized and fractured that even if you are connected to 10 opennap nets, you wouldn't have over 40-50000 total users, with lots of duplications from multiple net connections.

Most block or limits winmx, especially because winmx uses a browse command that loads the servers, instead of a p2p direct browse. A winmx friendly net could cure that.

I have never seen that before.. samspade lists the host as the IP. They used to have a hostname assigned. Interesting change.

Also, even though the 'owners' are listed in timbuktu, the winmx infrastructure, relay servers and the above listed dn servers are located in the USA, TX and GA - so still vulnerable to RIAA dirty tricks i would think.

i just talked to Sabre (as in SabMX) and he's working on writing a peer cache server as i am writing this. Soon he will release a copy of SabMX that will work just fine and just like winmx did, but it will use a different peer cache. As soon as he does, we will be back in "business".

Only problem will be distribution. It won't have nearly as many people as winmx had because most of winmx's users have never stepped into a chat and would have no way of knowing there is a fix or where to get it.

good news will be the riaa won't have a copy for awhile so the fakes will all be gone

keep in mind this will be a temp solution till something permanent can be worked out as nobody wants sabre to end up in a legal mess either.

If he needs help with hosting of the peer cache, he will be in touch ...i told him plenty of people willing to help him out if he needs it can be found here and i hear he's currently parked in vladd's room

so all hope is NOT lost
