Favourite Apps

Postby < E > on Thu Dec 20, 2007 10:44 pm

Ok being fairly nubbish to linux the first thing i found daunting was the vast choice of applications available to linux users.
What are your favorites ?
What applications have caused you headaches trying to install , find or even run. What problems have you encountered using the Terminal ?
Whats the biggest obstacle you feel you've had to overcome making the switch from a M$ win32 based operating system to *nix* ........ One recent problem i encountered was trying to figure how to use my *nix* box for everyday tasks such as FTP transfer after searching through the repositories i found that all FTP based applications on Ubuntu are server based with none offering a GUI based upload only .. this was overcome by installing Fire Ftp for Mozilla .....

Come on jackanorys tell us your stories

PS. Bacon i know theres a better more suitable application I'm not aware of until you post a reply stating that the path I've taken is not the preferred choice and that you know a "better" way ...

FileZilla should be in Ubuntu's respository or you can download it from here and compile it for your version, but honestly most of the time I use fireFTP as well.

I like Ktorrent but I would rather find a Gnome Specific solution eventually.

And I still haven't found a good alternative to notepad++. It runs in wine, but it is not the same, I lost some of my favorite features.

FileZilla i may have overlooked, reading through the repositories is quite some task when you don't know 90% of the software names , functions or usability ... as far as a BT client I'm only using the laptop for *nix* at this point and it has no media of any form it's an anti procrastination toy . N++ is a very cool proggie but i've only just started with it on the M$ system am running . As it stands the only reason i haven't made the switch completely is because if i break a Win32 system i know i can fix it .... With *nix* I'd be Google reliant ..
